I know this is an old thread, but I just wanted to thank the posters for the help. It was so long time since I played with midi files (since the last century, in fact, with a then state of the art Gravis Ultrasound), that I had completely forgot about the sound banks and stuff.

Just a note, thought: the aur packages mentioned lack the arch label which makepkg seems to need now. You can easily solve this adding "arch=('i686')" to the PKGBUILD (or use the newer one provided in the comments for sfarkxtc).

Kmid is playing those old files in their full glory now!
