The service status is still running and the ps output confirmed that but it never starts X.

No, unfortunately, it ended up the same. I added it to the end of the linux section in the kernel parameters. Its so odd, it just sits there until I login from the main terminal and then it loads. Its as is the login GUI for plasma is never being called. Any other ideas?
