Ok, I take back what I said, seems like they do some kind of regression testing. However that makes it even more strange that they missed such a massive change.
Don't get me wrong, I do love that Intel has been supporting Linux for years, way before it was "cool". But unfortunately the state of their Linux drivers is still far below the Windows ones.

Interestingly, the 5.5.6 kernel has stabilized the gpuwatchdog crashes. It included a number of drm patches, but nothing i915 or intel specific. I've just updated to 5.5.7, which does in fact include quite a few i915 patches - keeping fingers crossed that nothing crash-y was re-introduced.
Offline
I am using the 5.5.7 for hours and it seems working fine to me.

Hmm.. After I launch Chromium, even through not using it, the crash issue starts happening again. In the daytime, I am using Firefox for hours and everything is good. Is it a Chromium issue instead of Kernel?

This is a perfect time to test the regression testing system. The drivers are currently broken, so it should be ringing alarm bells. If it isn't, then the tests can be adjusted so that they will actually catch this bug.

Still happening.

I'm now running linux-5.5.8, linux-firmware-20200224 and chromium-80.0.3987.132-2. chromium-80.0.3987.122 was stable and I had no crashes while running that version. However, the re2 update forced me to update chromium to 80.0.3987.132-2, and now I'm getting the crashes again.
I'm seriously beginning to wonder if chromium/chrome isn;t the issue here.

Please read stable-kernel-rules, commits which do not fix bugs in stable and commits which are not in Linus's tree are not allowed in stable.

I wasn't expecting the outstanding +/- 400 i915 patches to have been backported to 5.5.8. They were in the initial merge for the 5.6 kernel. At this point I'm wondering where the i915 module bugs end and whatever chrome/chromium bugs begin. It's becoming obvious that there is some problematic interaction between the two.

5.6? https://patchwork.freedesktop.org/patch/348576/ was the last of 5.6 Intel DRM pull
https://patchwork.freedesktop.org/patch/355091/ the 400 patches you mentioned before is in Dave Airlie's drm/drm-next tree/branch not yet in Linus's tree.

Nearly three years since I last logged into ALF
So far, so good with 5.6-rc5. Crunched through a dozen kernel builds (4.x and 5.x in parallel) while playing back a movie and browsing the web at the same time. Did the same on a Buster Stable GNOME box which suffered the same issues through 5.5.8 and is now humming along as expected on 5.6-rc5. Time will tell...

Hello. I have 5.5.8 kernel, but a bug still exists. I have it is not associated with webkit. I use firefox, but this bug appears when entering the GUI (Xfce). CPU: Intel Pentium N3710

It's always the same one, so rereporting it here isn't going to magically fix it. Follow the gitlab bug reports. See in particular: https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/drm/intel/issues/1201 Apparently new patches have been sent to the stable queue so should hopefully land in the next few kernels.

I think arch already carries four of the five 1201 patches plus three additional patches

Edit:
@jghodd can you reproduce the issue using 5.6-rc6 or drm-tip or 5.5.9.arch1-2 with the missing 1201 patch?

@loqs i'm currently running the 5.5.10 kernel with chromium-80.0.3987.149 and so far i haven't been able to reproduce the issue. i've been using the latest chromium version for 2 days now and the latest kernel for 1 day. i did have the issue once or twice since i lasted posted, but figured y'all had had enough of those to make the point. so, the older version of chromium (chromium-80.0.3987.132) + linux-5.5.9 and linux-5.5.8 caused random freezing, but the latest chromium + linux-5.5.9 and 5.5.10 seems to be a stable combination. so far.

I can confirm this, yesterday it crashed twice with 5.5.9 and today I played Stadia for over 2 hours in chromium vaapi with no issues at all!

Got one today - linux-5.5.10 + chromium-80.0.3987.149

Have you reported it upstream or tried reproducing it with 5.6-rc6 or drm-tip or 5.5.10.arch1-1 with the missing 1201 patch?

5.5.11 still not ok !!!

@loqs 2 more crashes on 5.5.10 and now another one on 5.5.11. do you have a PKGBUILD for 5.6 which includes the correct kernel config file for arch? if so, i'll gladly test it.
