Tested xorg 6.8.0 and Ati-drivers 3.9.0 (reinstalled drivers after Xorg upgrade).
TERRIBLE ! Xserver crashes all the time. Sometimes during starting KDE sometimes short after. Used my old xorg.config. Do i have to make a new one?
I'll try 3.12.0 later. And strange: KDE doesn't have any Menu-entries anymore  ! Seems i have to reinstall KDE too.

No, I suspect your xorg.conf shouldn't have to change very much.
Guess the safest thing to do is wait until ATI supports xorg instead of XFree86.
Frankly, we are lucky the drivers work as stable as they do with xorg.
Here's Gentoo's solution to the problem:
eerror "you are using a xorg-x11 version too new !!!"
eerror "You must downgrade to xorg-x11-6.7.0 otherwise"
eerror "trying to use opengl will crash X"
die "Better safe than sorry."
rage3d.net discussion on xorg-6.8.0 & fglrx-3.12.0. The jist of it is fglrx drivers don't do any 3D/OpenGL stuff with xorg-6.8.0. So either switch back to the radeon driver, or stay with xorg-6.7.0.

I made 3.12.0 packages. My testing results in better framerates in glxgears than the 3.11.1 version. I'll be building a kernel26mm package and uploading them shortly.

lol, I'm not even sure people are using my PKGBUILDs.

Well i use now xorgs builtin radeon driver. That way i have only MESA-support but at least xvideo works (why didn't ATi get it working  ) ! The only game i play is DAoC under WinXP. So it doesn't matter. Hopefully "radeon" supports OpenGL in the future for my Radeon 9600XT.

I installed links 3.12.0 packages for current xorg. They work fine except no direct rendering.

Right, I've read that 3D stuff will not work. I'm sticking with xorg 6.7.0 until ATI puts out 6.8.x drivers, and even then if they are worse than the 3.12.0 drivers, I'm staying with it. I have no desire for all that nifty compositing stuff, so I'll only upgrade to 6.8.x when I have a need to.

Do you by chance have a 6.7 xorg package lying around somewhere?

Yes, these drivers (my packages) won't work with xorg-6.8.x. I am mirroring the xorg-6.7.0 package on my website. Its posted earlier in this thread.

I have read and read this post again and again. But before I start following the steps on my computer, I'm wondering if these drivers apply for me. I will list the specs on my computer and can someone tell me if these drivers apply to me. My problem with my computer is that It works well. but when i run for example, tuxkart, or any game, i dont get "direct rendering". The game is super slow. I just can't play any games.

New ATI drivers version 3.14.1 are out. BUT ... still no xorg support, xvideo still isn't fixed and then that ...
Known Issues
The following section provides a brief description of known issues associated with the latest version of ATI proprietary Linux driver. These issues include:
· TV Display is corrupt after switching resolutions
· 3D Linux applications corrupt or hang with "force multi-sample visuals" enabled
· X Fails to load on systems with Linux kernel version 2.6.x
Hmm ... seems like i realy have to buy a Nvidia card  !

Man, ATI's gotta get their ass in gear. They can't release crap like that. I'm not even going to bother packaging 3.14.1 if it won't load on 2.6.

ATI's linux support almost seems to be going backwards... What kind of halfassed solution doesn't support 2.6?

I bet because the "supported" operating system is Red Hat Enterprise 3, which is based on the 2.4 kernel, ATI is still only supporting 2.4. They don't care about 2.6 yet.
Offline
Well at least they give a solution :
X Fails to load on systems with Linux kernel version 2.6.x
This information applies to the following system configurations:Linux kernel version 2.6.x
Any ATI Linux driver
A blank screen may appear momentarily when X starts to load. The following error message (or similar) may appear on the text console or in /var/log/XFree86.0.log:(EE) fglrx(0): [agp] unable to acquire AGP, error ""xf86_ENODEV""
This is not a problem with the display driver.
Version 2.6 kernels require a second kernel module in addition to agpgart, which should be named similar to the manufacturer of your motherboard AGP chipset. This error message should occur if the other agp module is not loaded.
This issue can be worked around as follows:
First make sure that agpgart is loading properly.
To find out which AGP controller your motherboard uses, issue the following command: lspci | grep AGP
To find a list of AGP related kernel modules installed on your machine, issue the following command and look for a module (*.ko file) that suits your AGP Controller: ls /lib/modules/`uname -r`/kernel/drivers/char/agp
Use the modprobe command (as root) to load the module. For example: On a motherboard using a VIA® AGP Controller, you would load the via-agp.ko using modprobe as follows (notice that the trailing .ko is omitted): modprobe via-agp
Check the modprobe manpage for more information on loading kernel modules. To verify that the AGP module is already loaded, run lsmod as root. With the XServer running and the connection established, the usage count of this module must be greater than zero.
If you cannot find a suitable agp module for your motherboard, then you may want to upgrade to the latest version of the Linux kernel, or check your motherboard manufacturer's website for more information.
Didn't read this before. Sorry.
And perhaps there is still some hope, but you never know : http://www.rage3d.net/board/showpost.ph … stcount=27
