I have an old installation that I hope to get back on track.
(Linux hulk 4.6.4-1-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Mon Jul 11 19:12:32 CEST 2016 x86_64 GNU/Linux)
Currently installed versions
pacman -Q libarchive
libarchive 3.2.1-2
pacman -Q pacman
pacman 5.0.1-4
How can I break out of that vicious cycle.
I need the latest libarchive to install zstd-1.4.4-1 and libarchive-3.4.1-1 using pacman.
But pacman can't handle the new compression format without libarchive.
I tried to install libarchive from the src tarball from http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/blfs/vi … chive.html
./configure --prefix=/usr --disable-static && make
make install
Which is probably not the way I should resolve the issue (obviously it didnt work)
The process exists with status code 127. See below.

This is in the news section on the Arch home page.

Given that is really the only roadblock. It might be much more fruitful to update incrementally to at least every manual intervention according to the news using the ALA: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Arch_Linux_Archive

You can use the ALA to upgrade in stages.
Just set the repo forward from your current last update (2016) a few months at a time upgrading as you go.
