Re: Looking 4 a good but cheap graphics card

Well I went out and bought the GeForce FX 5200 AGP card with 128 MB DDR, changed the xorg.conf driver to 'nv', installed the card, and booted up again. Wow! I'm sure that it's not just my imagination: the color is much more vivid. I think that I'll be liking this the more I use it.

Thanks to all of you who helped me out with tips and time invested in this little adventure.

Regards,

Damn, too late sad
The Nvidia FX* series are the worst series Nvidia ever made..

But ehh, if you install the real Nvidia drivers, modify your xorg.conf driver line to "nvidia" and you'll have real 3D support.

Re: Looking 4 a good but cheap graphics card

I can't believe no one has mentioned the cheap but veritable nvidia ti series.  One of my comps still runs a ti 4200 and it's still going strong.  They are also alot cooler than the 5X series. These are considered some of the best value cards ever, as they still run latest stuff decently.  Anway, too late...

I can't believe they didn't get mentioned either, I forgot how great they were... *nostalgia*  I can't believe I didn't mention them...

Re: Looking 4 a good but cheap graphics card

I was going to comment on this thread warning him not to go FX but I was too late as well. The FX line is seriously their worst line of cards. I owned a 5200 and hated it (everybody I know that has one agrees with me). If you can still return the 5200 I would and I'd spend a few more bucks on the 6200 or maybe even a little more on the 6600 or 7200 or something.

I use a FX 5200 in a media pc and it does all that I need. The card can handle hdtv recordings and produces an excellent picture. So it can certainly handle "DVD Films" as referenced in the first post. And there's no fan (quiet).

Irrelevant of whether the FX series is crap.

It's perfect. The card performs the users' required tasks more than adequately. Some people get far too caught up in the features and fancies and forget the bottom line. The product has a purpose, and as long as it fulfills that purpose well and to the user's needs, it's perfect.

Just to put a spanner in the works, I love my FX5200, because it does exactly what I need: XV, and enough grunt to play games using zSnes.  I love my 6600GT, because it does exactly what I need: XV, and enough grunt to play all the games I own on the highest settings.  I also love my generic SiS chip on my "server" mobo, because it does exactly what I need: I plug in a monitor when it goes wrong and look at a terminal.  Spot the pattern in my statements?  I could go on all day.

Re: Looking 4 a good but cheap graphics card

I personally still use NVidia FX5200 and have never had any problems with it. I've slightly overclocked it and I can play almost all newer games that are on the market today. That's pretty good for a 128mb $40 graphics card if you ask me.
