i'm encountering the same problems on my RTX 2080 Ti with gnome 3.36 and nvidia driver version 440.64-2. As soon as i set the gnome scaling to 200% my display turns off. This problem does not occur on 300% scaling. So my temporary workaround for this problem is:
- Set the gnome scaling option to 300%
- Set font-scaling to 0.7 (or anything that fits for you)

Ok i fixed temporarily with

GDM login ----> open a shell with Control+alt+Fn

$ gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.interface scaling-factor 1

Reboot and login

After:

# ln -s /usr/lib/libgnome-desktop-3.so /usr/lib/libgnome-desktop-3.so.17

I can open broken gnome-control-center ad from monitor GUI setted scale to 200%

Work well for my 4K monitor...Animation seems faster and more responsive than 3.34 (only some Paper Icons missing images...setted to Adwaita default waiting for update)

@fabrixx, Are you able to adjust the scaling factor manually? In other words can you set the scaling factor to 200% after login in "Gnome Settings" and then back to 100% before logout without crashing your system?

I tried now and yes I can, then I reset it to 200 again

Did you reboot after creating the link as well? It didn't work for me (the link creation was successful, but my monitors still turn off when I change the scaling), and I can't reboot to test that theory right now, as I'm in the middle of my work day.

Not work. After reboot, don't work and can't reapply same settings. I downgrade again..

That's too bad. I'd really love a simple workaround for now. After using 4K for a while, it's hard to go back.

The bug report claims that installing mutter-performance from the AUR works as a fix in the short term!  Hope that helps some of you.

I’m using mutter-performance and it did work fine. So some of its patches have fixed this problem, I’m suggesting that arch team take these patches temporarily.

I'm also confirming, the issue has been fixed
