Re: October 2006 Screenshots

Sort of a mega-respond post.  I think I got everyone. smile

codemac: Nice stuff, I especially like the script to resize the background.

Yah, after I cleaned it up so it wasn't making 10 system calls, it now seems pretty quick.  My first version of that script would make the CPU peg out at 100% for about 20 seconds.  Very annoying when watching a movie.  Now that I'm using the imagemagick perl interface instead, All I notice now is a small spike on my cpu load graph for maybe half a second.  I'm proud. smile

The new version can be found here.  I even documented it.

rab: besides smoon, your one of the only archers that _likes_ perl.

Maybe smoon and I are on to something?

satanix: Nice job one of the best custom fbox themes i have seen

Thanks.  I use openbox, but fluxbox is nice too.  I never could get used to Flux's bar/dock thing.  (Yah, you can disable it, I know).

Openbox seems to hit the spot though.  It's incredibly tweakable.  It's a piece of cake to make it do fun things with it.

harlekin: Looks really nice. Can anyone tell me how I can display the processes like that? Saw it plenty of times yet.

Conky is what I use.  It's great stuff.  You can install it from pacman.

harlekin: And last but not least: How is the package called containing ssinfo?

try this thread

fk: What is this for a Panel

I use pypanel.  It's a pretty simple setup.  I just set the fonts, set a backgroud color of 0x003f63 to match the blue on my wallpaper, and disabled borders.

slackhack: can you kill apps from that processes menu? would it work in xfce4, or is it only for *boxes?

Yeah, I can kill processes with that menu.  I usually kill processes with xkill though.  I bind the Pause/Break key to launch xkill, and when firefox freezes, i smack that button - click on firefox, and WHAMO! Gone! smile

The script I use has been ported from a few *box windowmanagers in it's time.  Maybe you can figure out a way to do it in fvwm?

phrakture: a) holy hell you have the most complicated setup I've seen in a long time.... reminds me of a sysadmin I used to work with

Complicated?  My e16 configs were a nighmare and far worse I think.  An old screenshot of that desktop is still online

I eventually got tired of fidding with e16's config files and moved onto simplier things. smile

phrakture: b) is that xclock? where's your config for it, it looks rad

It's called yesClock.  Despite being a java application, It's kinda neat.  It shows exactly when sunrise and sunset are on a 24 hour clock.  You can tweak the colors by right clicking on the running app.  If you do run it - it lookes better without borders.  Try a startup like java -jar ~/java/yesClock_1.3.6.jar --noframe

stonecrest: Is it just me, or are people posting larger and larger thumbnails?

Maybe it's bigger because more of us are running at higher resolutions?  In the thread intro it said 20%.  Thats a thumbnail of 320x240 for a 1600x1200 resolution.  I dont exactly use 20%, but the I posted was 312x237.  Maybe the intro should be changed to specify a max thumbnail widthxheight?

How's this?
20061002-tiny.jpg

Yes, I'm being a smartass smile

benplaut: Yo, xterminus... i want your conkyrc 0_0 (just the TEXT)

enjoy!

This screenshot doesn't really show everything... maybe I'll make some more later.

The goodies: DerertRed Color scheme (with tweaks) QTCurve dull glass theme for QT and GTK, AIGLX and Beryl (runs nice on this 4 year old mid-line then laptop), custom icons, some customized fonts etc.

I've got emerald and beryl configured for some customized eye candy as well... maybe I'll make a quick video later too smile

i really like that shot. i'm not a gamer -- is that background from a game? the atmosphere is great.

as much as i like and use rox, it's too bad it can't be integrated better with transparency.

I have started to play with Conky, after seeing it in some screenshots here. I have to admit it more impressed with it than I thought it would be, even though I am just using it for Mpd monitoring (for now).
