learn one editor (learn it well), and use it for everything.
there are basically two approaches if you care about your craft:
use vim and use tools that let you embed it / call it to do the editing (elinks, mutt)
or use emacs and use emacs' big application library (w3m, gnus/wanderlust/vm)
by the way, imo: the vi mode of editing is the fastest available, whereas emacs is the most powerful editor out there ;-)
but don't jump to conclusions and try to use viper mode in emacs! :-P
