":set mouse=a" allows me to select line numbers in a sane way (ie. "not")?
@boscaiolo, does ":set ttymouse=xterm2" work better? (despite gnu screen)
No, it seems for these purposes interchangeable with ":set ttymouse=sgr" (which is,
for reasons unknown, the default.

Unknown reason (likely): https://github.com/vim/vim/pull/5042

Thank you seth, and sorry @boscaiolo, I don't mean to hijack your thread...
seth, I'll create a new thread for this when I have a little 'extra' time to play with this and still can't figure out what's the problem;-)
Not a problem qinohe, the two threads are linked I suspect.
I'd start w/ a clean vimrc and see how that behaves w/ enabled mouse.
Again: the TIE figh… TE may be *very* relevant here, in doubt try xterm (no tmux, no screen)
The clean .vimrc experiment sounds a good idea. I will find a moment for that. And,
screen has been mentioned a couple of times here so for clarity, in my case, I have
not even got round to installing screen yet. Screen is definitely not a factor.

No screen, no tmux? That mkes sgr even more suspicious…
Edit: "echo $TERM"?

Maybe it's better to keep it in this thread, your call!
I haven't done anything with it, yet! I think I'll create an ISO just to test this.
Already use vim for 15-20 years, so you would say I tackled this ... I didn't :-(

Ed, Ex, Vi, Vim... since 1989 AFAIR...
Used all of them ... we're getting old;-) or am I :-( ... oh my ..
The thing with tools like vim/vi/ex seems to be 'the deeper you dive in - the harder it gets'
Well to be honest, I was very happy with my vim setup for years until you posted this thread, and now seth has said he has no problems with it, at all, I'm frustrated it doesn't work here and I can't find why, grrrmmm.:(
I created the ISO and removed any trace of '~/vim-' {vimrc,.vim}
Also removed all XTerm config, still no joy!
No screen or tmux.
xterm 370-2
vim 8.2.4106-1
echo $TERM - xterm
