Unless there're other processes lingering around and occupying the RAM that would indicate a bug in the GTT allocation/amdgpu module.
Did you try whether you get the same behavior w/ openbox?

I am pretty sure my AwesomeWM setup has no compositor or stuff like that, would that do for this?

Yes. I only suggest openbox because it has little dependencies and is trivial to setup.
Maybe make sure that you're not running awesome+plasma because the latter has a truckload of GL contexts.
Another aspect could be to toggle xf86-video-amdgpu (ie. try it if you're currently using the modesetting driver and ditch it to try the modesetting driver otherwise)

Yes the AwesomeWM has no plasma stuff going on. Regarding the amdgpu driver I have not changed it for anything else.
