Re: nvidia seems not working with xorg

Unfortunately, I do not have that option in the BIOS! I have a friend who had a lot of troubles having both cards working together, and it ended up to disable the intel card; but his BIOS supported that. Is this a common problem in Arch? Can you educate me the source of the problem?

Re: nvidia seems not working with xorg

This is a current situation w/ the nvidia linux driver, it's unrelated to the distro and I'm not sure whether this kind of feature is even supposed to work on mere 3D controllers.
(Hence the idea to elevante that thing into a VGA device through the BIOS)

Re: nvidia seems not working with xorg

Suppose that I found a newer BIOS version that disables the intel card, why this will be a resolution? I mean: why will the nvidia card work? My understanding from the above is that the video coding is not found!

Re: nvidia seems not working with xorg

Nobody says that it would. I speculated that if you could get

02:00.0 3D controller: NVIDIA Corporation GM108M [GeForce 940MX] (rev a2)

to be

02:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation GM108M [GeForce 940MX] (rev a2)

the features that seem bound to output (video decoding, some EGL surfaces) might be available.

A BIOS update would most unlikely provide such feature if the GPU isn't already setup to act as VGA device (and you likely had that option in the BIOS)

For all I can say is that atm. you can use the GPU for opengl acceleration, but not video decoding.
If this is ever to be changed, that change would likely come from the nvidia driver - but the 3D controller might not even have the relevant DSPs.

Re: nvidia seems not working with xorg

One more question for more understanding please: If this is the problem of NVIDIA driver, does this mean that all people using dual GPUs (Intel and NVIDIA) on Arch cannot use the NVIDIA for video rendering?

Re: nvidia seems not working with xorg

No, it means that a log of people w/ nvidia 3D controllers don't seem to be able to.
I'd be less sure about configurations where the nvidia GPU is an actual VGA device.
And it's also not clear whether that's a driver or HW restriction.

Edit: I suppose this is some xy-problem btw?
Why are you not using the video decoder of the intel chip?

Re: nvidia seems not working with xorg

Do you mean why I do not simply use: `brave` or `firefox` instead of `prime-run brave` or `prime-run firefox` ?

Re: nvidia seems not working with xorg

Yes.
The IGP HW decoder should do just fine?

Re: nvidia seems not working with xorg

1. This takes us to another problem: firefox does not support some features like brave, specially on youtube recording tool. However, brave freezes without the DRI option in the xorg.conf !
2. Do you think a distro like Centos takes care of this hassle better? A friend of mine assured to me that they have very good ready-packaged drivers that resolves these issues; I am not sure.

Re: nvidia seems not working with xorg

centos is a RHEL knock-off, feel free to try a live distro but you won't get around limitations of your HW nor shortcomings of the proprietary nvidia driver this way.

What does one have to do with to other or either with anything in this thread?

If you mean https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Intel_ … RI3_issues you should probably first and foremost stop using xf86-video-intel.
