Re: root device not found. Skipping fsck

Please try adding "vmd" instead of "ahci" and let me know: you won't break anything or lose your data.
In the worst case won't simply fix your current problem

It's the Intel Volume Management Device Driver.
https://cateee.net/lkddb/web-lkddb/VMD.html
which is enabled by default in many arch-based distros.

I'm pretty sure this is due a bug related to latest kernel
https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/77715

Some other people seems to have fixed this using libata.force=nolpm kernel parameter, so maybe you should try also this workaround.

Re: root device not found. Skipping fsck

@snazza the vmd fix didn’t work, though I was finally able to boot when downgrading to kernel 6.1.12-arch1-1 specifically, I already tried this solution as suggested but with the LTS version which is ironically some versions higher (6.1.15).
Lessons learned, always plan a backup/restore solution on rolling release distros

Re: root device not found. Skipping fsck

Hi!
I'm using also an AMD based system and encountered the same issue after an upgrade. Reverting to systemd, systemd-libs and systemd-sysvcompat 253.1-1 fixed it for me.
I don't know why and the changes to the package seem small.

Caused here by my docking-station. When the laptop is not docked, image creation succeeds.
That is nasty.

I have the same issue, I suspect it's my screen's built-in USB hub..

Although manually running mkinitcpio -p seems to work? its only the pacman one that doesn't, not sure what they do differently..

Did you have time to open the issue on mkinitcpio gitlab?

log snippet:

sort: cannot read: '/sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:08.1/0000:0c:00.3/usb1/1-2/1-2.4/1-2.4:1.1/ep_81/uevent': No such file or directory

Can confirm same issue happened to me while running pacman -Syu with a Lenovo Docking station.
Had to chroot from live usb and re-run mkinitpcio -p linux which resolved the issue.
