You didn't post the output of "xrandr --verbose" (there're 8 XGA modes and one of the is interlaced…)

Sorry I couldn't respond soon enough, I had some important matters to attend too. Here is the result of xrandr --verbose. I don't know what to make of it also I am using a compositor - "xcompmgr" i wonder if a compositor has anything to do with it also.

You can try the other 1024x768 modes as well, but usually interlaced or doublescan is no good idea.

"xcompmgr" i wonder if a compositor has anything to do with it also.

Kill that to make sure you're not facing a situation where the compositor doesn't resize the view (though you'd still see a cursor then)

xrandr: Configure crtc 0 failed

I don't know why the othermodes failed I can't load my wine game without adjusting the resolution, I've had several black screen freezes without adjusting the res. on 1024x768 games.

I think it's not showing the other resolutions being set by loading the game. I think I mite be on the right track but I'm a little puzzled. It shows the screen resolution and the game crashing and not loading the resolution.

That's not a solution on certain wine games that have to adjust the resolution it doesn't do it automatically I googled the game "Anno 1503" and I can't get the screen resolution to shift when loading the game that requires 1280x1024. But the game Civ4 loads on the current depth. So something isn't right, I checked the debugging and I couldn't find anything I am using the i915 modesetting driver with nvidia dual cards. I would appriciate it if other people contributed something to this thread as well. If anybody is familiar with sucessfully changing the resolution without the screen going to black freeze.

I am having a problem changing screen resolutions from a few programs openmw and some games on wine/crossover. My dfault resolution is 1980x1080 I need to load my program at 1280x1024 and when it quits revert back to default.

Ok so I came up with some research. It seems I need to generate an edid for 1280x1024 and some other configs. I came across a program called 'edid-generator' if anybody is familiar with it's functionality i would appriciate and the edids i generate go in a certain folder.

If your output doesn't accept that resolution, you can add as many custom edids as you want.
You'd need to know the specific modeline it ("hypothetically", there's absolutely no indication it exists) would accept, the generic one is present and the previous suggestion was to get rid of that to prevent xrandr from selecting any other mode.

I switched my modes in xrandr to 1280x1024, which is the resolution I need and I did xrandr --prop this is the result.

I got the EDID for this resolution, clearly showing in this status check. How do I get the EDID to register with the modification. Something modded in xorg.conf.d? like a 15-monitor.conf or something along those lines?

That's the same edid as in https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=19#p19 and it still doesn't advertise a 1280x1024 resolution.
Do you see anything on the monitor (meaning "your desktio") w/ the mode in #43?

I did the Secition 'Monitor' thing and I don't understand this to well. I am having a problem with the nvidia and i915 dual card igpu screen thing when i try to load a wine game and it has to adjust the resolution the screen goes black and freezes. But on games that accept the current resolution thats default it works fine. My default resolution is 1980x1080 or something along those lines. When a wine game calls for adjusting the resolution to say 1280x1024 i get the crash. This is not effected by my espxe playstation 1 emulator it's fine adjusting the resolution. And my super nintendo zsnes works fine too. How do you do a new log in Xorg my cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log is still not current and i don't know where or how to get a current log. The biggest detterent to linux is stuff just don't work out of the box sometime but there so much to learn and you can't possibly find enough information on google. I skowered the web for this issue and i belive it's a problem with nvidia. Linux is free and it is free because it don't work on everything with constant debugging everything works fine in windows. I am requesting other people respond to this thread. I am not recieving a solution.

First off all, that's a doublescan mode and will unlikely work.

Second, it got already added to the server. Explicitly adding random modelines that already are getting automatically added anyway obviously won't achieve exactly nothing.

Third, if you want to add a different edid, https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Kernel … s_and_EDID - "CustomEDID" is a proprietary option of the nvidia driver WHICH IS NOT RELEVANT HERE! The output is attached to the intel chip.

Lastly. For the last time, since this is going absolutely nowhere.
Unlike the user in the linked thread you don't lack an EDID and your EDID isn't bogus.
Your output does not accept that mode and it does not advertise any other mode for that resolution.


Boot some live distro, eg. grml and/or the LTS kernel and see whether you can change the resolution there.

However I got an error trying to start up my Xorg typing 'startx'. Don't know where to go from here but I think I'm on the right track.

I think I mite be getting the error cause I didn't do 'Option Modelines' as opposed to just  'Modeline' I haven't put it into action yet.
