Re: Cannot Shutdown/poweroff with AMD Radeon 7800 XT, poweroff>rebootloop

I am able to reboot / shutdown with

$ uname -r
6.7.0-rc1-1-drm-tip-git-g3d1e36691e73

Re: Cannot Shutdown/poweroff with AMD Radeon 7800 XT, poweroff>rebootloop

Shutting down works with 6.6.1, but 6.6.2 broke it again. So for now downgrading the kernel might be necessary until it is fixed.

Same problem here with linux-amd 6.7.v.0-1 kernel and latest Arch kernel.

Re: Cannot Shutdown/poweroff with AMD Radeon 7800 XT, poweroff>rebootloop

The system with AMD Ryzen 7900X CPU and XFX RX7800XT GPU running on kernel version 6.6.11-1-lts shuts down properly, but intermittently encounters the following error during boot, causing the boot process to halt. Pressing the reset button on the computer allows for a successful reboot.

Re: Cannot Shutdown/poweroff with AMD Radeon 7800 XT, poweroff>rebootloop

Hello, I just registered on the forum because I have the same issue with a 7800XT, I'm new to arch from last summer, until kernel 6.6 everything was fine. I changed my graphic card like a week before the 6.6 released, so I took me quite some time to figure out it was not an hardware issue with my new card.
I have the shutdown issue since the 6.6 kernel got released, I tried with Zen, TKG and Liquorix all have the same issue of not powering down, same with TKG 6.7.
I also have a reboot issue, after the init when sddm start, screen go black and I have amdgpu error in dmesg, everything works except display, I can SSH in from another PC.
Sometimes, it will shutdown properly, but  everytime I rebooted (a willing reboot) to a blackscreen.

With the standard kernel it's fine no issue at all, so for now it's Ok.

Mainboard: Asus x570 TUF gaming
CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 5900X
GPU: AMD Radeon 7800XT

Hello.
Can you explain what 'standard kernel' means? Are you referring to the default kernel of Arch?

Yes the default one
I'm currently running this one Linux archlinux 6.6.10-arch1-1 #1 SMP PREEMPT_DYNAMIC Fri, 05 Jan 2024 16:20:41 +0000 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Re: Cannot Shutdown/poweroff with AMD Radeon 7800 XT, poweroff>rebootloop

Hello,

Same as Meneldor, just registered because well... 7800 XT.
Just to add my 2cts (and maybe pinpoint the issue better.... or make it even more confusing, who knows), I'm also running the linux kernel (6.6.10-arch1-1) and I have the shutdown / reboot issue. Symptoms (just to be clear) : shutting down (without any -f / --force flag) seems to properly shut down the system, until I get an error on screen :

spi-nor spi0.0: Software reset failed: -524

I'm not entirely sure it's related, but it's the last dying words of the PC, should respect that. Anyway, next is the screen going black, no more signal from the GPU, and then nothing. PC stays electrically turned on (all fans spinning, all nasty RGB glowing, etc), and I have to force the shutdown with the power button. Same with reboot, which doesn't reboot.

What works:

  • reboot -f (and similar forced shutdown/reboot command)s

  • adding nomodeset to the kernel parameters

  • sadly.. my Win11 dual boot, which doesn't seem to have any issue with the card (not really useful except to hint that the mobo/bios/gpu do well together). BTW, Archlinux and Windows 11 each have their own nvme, boot order prioritize arch, which was installed after Win, and my refind just find the Windows EFI on the other nvme, nothing too weird

If it can be useful, boot journal -> http://0x0.st/HU5h.txt
Available for tests if anyone has an idea that won't make the PC light itself in hellish fire.

module_blacklist=spi-nor

But I suspect it's a red herring.

Will try, thanks! Wasn't sure it was a good idea to blacklist this one, even if it fails on shutdown. But that's indeed not the issue, as the message still appears while... I just updated to 6.7.0-arch3-1, and I hate this, but the issue is gone. Might be related to one of the numerous amdgpu updates shipped with the new kernel?

Anyway, if someone tries the 6.7.0 with similar results, that's maybe a kernel version to keep in mind in case it breaks again, as it apparently already did..?

EDIT: Too good to be true : shutdown seems OK, but reboot pulled another trick. PC rebooted, back to bootloader, I select Arch, and I get stuck in the same state as before (nothing on screen, PC electrically turned on)

Re: Cannot Shutdown/poweroff with AMD Radeon 7800 XT, poweroff>rebootloop

TKG just added a revert patch in his 6.7 kernel build for this issue https://github.com/Frogging-Family/linu … dd78318dac
For me the shutdown problem seems to be gone.

I can confirm that using the linux67-tkg kernel from that GITHUB that reverts that 6.7 patch around amdgpu power stuff fixes my reboot/shutdown problems. Hopefully something similar eventually lands in the standard Kernel path.

Is there somewhere I should report success with this patch reversal against 6.7?

Re: Cannot Shutdown/poweroff with AMD Radeon 7800 XT, poweroff>rebootloop

Also note that the patch in question is mostly about power limits in SMU v13, and the new 6.7.0 kernel (even the standard `linux` distributed by Arch) now ships with SMU v14. Maybe some cards are just not natively using/loading the v13 implem anymore and that could solve the issue (whether the kernel is patched or not)?

I'm ready to accept this may be a stupid hypothesis, but the mainstream 6.7.0-arch1 kernel (which fixed the issue for me) doesn't have the TKG patch applied apparently (haven't looked at everything, but see this for instance https://github.com/archlinux/linux/blob … e.c#L4053).

That would be from https://github.com/archlinux/linux/comm … 043ee23357 which is the commit that introduced https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=290707.
