Re: NetworkManager won't shutdown, hangs kworker - after linux 6.6.5

This is an interesting thread, as I have experienced similar issues with kernel 6.6.5 running in Arch with a BCM4322, the same hardware running LMDE with kernel 6.1.66 (or as Debian calls it, "6.1.0-15-amd64," and had assumed it was a Core2Duo issue (the same hardware has a T9900 CPU). I assume whatever was wrong with 6.6.5 got backported to 6.1.x; as I'd bailed from Arch/XFCE when the issue cropped up upon install of kernel 6.6.5 over 6.6.4, only to have exactly the same issue occur in the update from kernel 6.1.64 ("6.1.0-14-amd64") to 6.1.66 ("6.1.0-15-amd64") on LMDE/Cinnamon.

It makes sense that it's WiFi-related, as after both of the above kernel updates (on either Arch or LMDE; it is a kernel, not a distro or packaging problem), I could run non-network-accessing processes while NetworkManager applet spun and tried to connect, but once I did anything that attempted to access the network, including simply clicking on the spinning icon, no more commands would be processed, be they on the GUI or the CLI; they'd just hang, and couldn't be control-C'ed out. Shutdown had to be manually via power button.

So thanks for submitting a kernel patch, leoetlino, and let's hope it addresses the issue!

Re: NetworkManager won't shutdown, hangs kworker - after linux 6.6.5

Hello,

I have a Ryzen 5 5625U Dell Laptop with a Mediatek MT7921 wifi card.

I discovered that if I was to use the iwd backend with NetworkManager instead of wpa_supplicant, my system would be able to shut down normally. Also, I discovered that using iwd gave me noticeably better wifi performance, up to 60 Mbps.

I'm seeing the same. If I use a cable its fine. As soon as I plugin a wifi adapter NetworkManager spins its icon then the system hangs after 122 seconds.

I can also report this is an issue with devices using the following chipset:
rtl8814au
rtl88x2bu

As reported by HurricanePootis above, NetworkManager with iwd works without issue. It appears that bug affects wpa_supplicant.

Re: NetworkManager won't shutdown, hangs kworker - after linux 6.6.5

@Docbroke What was your process for swapping to iwd?

I ran pacman -S iwd
Then created /etc/NetworkManager/conf.d/wifif_backend.conf containing:

[device]
wifi.backend=iwd

Tried systemctl restart NetworkManager and also a reboot but still see the same issue with the machine hanging when trying to connect wifi devices.

Thank You.  In case it helps answering Greg KH's follow up:

So this is only for the 6.6.y tree?  If so, you should at least cc: the
other wireless developers involved in the original fix, right?

Any tree that back-ported '7e7efdda6adb wifi: cfg80211: fix CQM for non-range use' but does not contain '076fc8775daf wifi: cfg80211: remove wdev mutex' so both  6.6.y and 6.1.y.

And what commit actually fixed this issue upstream, why not take that
instead?

'076fc8775daf wifi: cfg80211: remove wdev mutex' does not apply cleanly to either 6.6.y or 6.1.y

Re: NetworkManager won't shutdown, hangs kworker - after linux 6.6.5

Yep! Got the exact same problem as well running the `6.6.5-arch1-1` kernel. Was genuinely really suprised that all the comments were so recent on an issue for once, until I saw that it's actually a kernel update issue. Thanks for submitting the patch.

Re: NetworkManager won't shutdown, hangs kworker - after linux 6.6.5

@TwistedRisers, I did the same, no issue with shutdown after one reboot.
However I think wpa_supplicant was better as iwd seem to disconnect frequently and has trouble with hidden networks.

Switching from wpa_supplicant to iwd also fixed it for me.

@loqs: 6.6.6 reverted the patch, however everyone who had tested Léo Lam's patch, should reply with a `Tested-by`-tag upstream: https://lore.kernel.org/stable/20231210 … olam.fr/#R

A discussion on that topic can be found also here: https://lore.kernel.org/stable/e374bb16 … njaro.org/

Re: NetworkManager won't shutdown, hangs kworker - after linux 6.6.5

@leoetlino @philm the fixed commit is queued for 6.1.70 [1]?  Will it be applied to 6.6 at some later point?

Re: NetworkManager won't shutdown, hangs kworker - after linux 6.6.5

Uninstalling broadcom-wl has solved the hang issue for me in the meantime. Though now it seems that the Internet connection is not as painfully slow as it was until I installed this driver for the first time, it is still slower than running on it. So I hope there's a fix soon :-/

Re: NetworkManager won't shutdown, hangs kworker - after linux 6.6.5

@akanski this issue was solved in  linux 6.6.6.arch1-1 / linux-lts 6.1.67-1.  linux-lts 6.1.70-1 added a version of 'wifi: cfg80211: fix CQM for non-range use'  adjusted to not cause the this issue.

Queued for 6.6.10 [2].
