Welp thanks for all the help, but I gave up on those monitors and used it as an excuse to get a 4k monitor. Very pretty!

Mine showed generic monitor whenever it happened until I started injecting the EDID. It would still sometimes wake up to 640X480, but it retained all the other monitor info. Hopefully injecting EDID *just works* for you.
I actually witnessed similar behavior in windows, but it is much less noticeable because it went from 1920X1200 to 1920X1080.

Thanks @DumbInACan. Good idea! I actually use mine as a second monitor, and it's obviously pretty old. Interesting that it's also imperfect for you on Windows, and maybe that *does* suggest it's an issue with the monitor, not the OS. Having said that, it's been fine since following @seth's suggestions
