[SOLVED] Problems with resizing windows after upgrading to Gnome 46

I updated yesterday my system and I have problems with gtk2 applications:
- cannot resize windows
- some buttons do not work
- sidebar scrolling does not work

I use Gnome 46 and X11.
One example of such application is doublecmd-gtk2.
Does anyone else see this?

Are you sure it's X11? Do the relevant clients exhibit this in eg. an openbox session?
(gtk2 was last updated 2023-04-15)

Re: [SOLVED] Problems with resizing windows after upgrading to Gnome 46

Thank you for replying.
I am sure that it is X11. Unfortunately I do not have openbox installed.
I did not say that gtk2 is responsible. I just said that gtk2 applications seem to have a problem.

Meanwhile, I also noticed other problems after the last update two days ago:
- when I type in terminal, the characters are printed with some delay
- when clicking some window, the window below it gets activated (this seems to be the case only with gtk2 applications again)
- I experienced some sort of crash in gnome, saying that the user needs to log out; then I could not log in again
- when rebooting I had twice a black screen with a X-shaped mouse cursor

I the last two cases I could reboot after login in one of the tty's.
The last three problems never happened before on this computer, so I think it is safely to say that there is a problem with the last update.

Any ideas what could cause these problems?

Well, "pacman -Syu openbox"

Gnome.

Re: [SOLVED] Problems with resizing windows after upgrading to Gnome 46

For the OP, try to downgrade libx11 to 1.8.7

Re: [SOLVED] Problems with resizing windows after upgrading to Gnome 46

I downgraded libx11 but the problem with resizing windows persisted.
Then I proceeded to also downgrade mutter and gnome-shell as described here (yes, I am on NVidia!).

While the black screen with X-shaped cursor seems to have improved (I only had it once and I could reboot - before I had to shutdown), the problem with resizing windows still persists. Meantime, I noticed that I also cannot resize the windows of videos played with ffplay, so I changed the title of this thread.

I will have to wait and see if further crashes occur in the future. Last crash happened after playing a video with ffplay and trying to resize its window with the mouse (generally, windows can be resized from the menu of their title bars but not by pulling the corners/sides with the mouse).

Edit 1: I did not have to wait long, crashes still occur!
(I get crashes with the message that something happened and the user needs to logout when manipulating windows either trying to resize them or move/activate them with the Super key; when a crash occurs the gnome-shell dumps core).

Edit 2: as the crashes seemed to get worse, I upgraded the downgraded mutter and gnome-shell back to version 46.

For clarification, grabbing the window by its border/titlebar and resizing/moving it around this way (not invoking the super key) works?
* Does gnome have the suprt key on a double feature (ie. pressing and releasing it w/o further interaction opens some runner or so)?
* Does gtk-demo cause the same (to simplify the testcase a bit)?

Re: [SOLVED] Problems with resizing windows after upgrading to Gnome 46

Mouse right-click on title bar -> Menu opens -> choose to resize window: this works but might crash gnome shell.
Grab the window by its edges or corners: this does not work with some windows (works always with for example gnome-terminal, firefox).
The Super key on Gnome: press once shows all windows on the desktop in a small format so that you can select one of them; press again reverts this.

I played a little bit with gtk-demo and chose "application main window". The resizing with the mouse (ie without choosing resize from title-bar menu) works but only on the right-lower corner and only once: second time does not work although the mouse-cursor changes shape. Choosing resize from title-bar menu works on all sides and corners many times (the mouse cursor changes accordingly).

Re: [SOLVED] Problems with resizing windows after upgrading to Gnome 46

Has resizing gtk-demo ever crashed gnome?

Re: [SOLVED] Problems with resizing windows after upgrading to Gnome 46

No, but I just played for 5 minutes, and that I guess is not enough.

Edit: if you mean the gtk-demo window itself: it is not possible to resize it except through the title-bar menu.

Re: [SOLVED] Problems with resizing windows after upgrading to Gnome 46

Because probably gnome is stupid and doesn't apply a proper decoration to clients and longer, so anything w/o client-side decoration is fucked. I guess.

Has it ever crashed anything when resizing it using the modifier key to the titlebar menu trigger?

Re: [SOLVED] Problems with resizing windows after upgrading to Gnome 46

Thank you Seth for looking into this issue.
Regarding your question, the answer is 90% No: not quite sure because I do not remember what exactly I was doing with the ffplay video window when it crashed - either scrolling through the video or resizing - but other than that No!

I have seen that experienced people generally avoid Gnome or other ready-made desktop solutions. May I ask you what graphic environment do you use, or can you recommend something known for stability?

Re: [SOLVED] Problems with resizing windows after upgrading to Gnome 46

You need to use the environment that suits you the best, this might even change over time but ol… experienced users will brick together a WM and the tools they want and highly customize that.

On topic: could you restore window decorations for the gtk2 and other clients following the gnome.org thread?
The crashes are then likely unrelated (gnome crashes a lot on users, this will hopefully become better with minor releases) - did you post a journal covering such crash anywhere?

Re: [SOLVED] Problems with resizing windows after upgrading to Gnome 46

I did not post a journal but I have saved them. Because of travel I will not have access to this machine for some time so I will have to suspend this thread for the time beeing. Hopefully when I come back a new release will have solved the problem - if not I will resume this thread.

Re: [SOLVED] Problems with resizing windows after upgrading to Gnome 46

I marked this thread a solved. The current version of mutter (46.0-3) does not solve the issue but there is a workaraund (see this and many thanks to the author!) and hopefully a future version of mutter will solve the problem.

For me the problem is solved easily by just issuing the following command:

pkill -HUP mutter-x11-fram

I just want to mention that this problem does not seem to depend on the video card: I have this issue on integrated Intel card AND on NVidia.
