Would simply uninstalling drkonqi break anything crucial? I was looking at that and wanting to be risk-averse!

No, https://archlinux.org/packages/extra/x86_64/drkonqi/ is only an optional dep for kcrash and probably dragged in by plasma-meta

Okay, I created a plasma-meta-no-drkonqi and uninstalled plasma-meta. Logging out now works every time! Thank you

I can confirm that uninstalling drkonqi and plasma-meta seem to make log outs work again. Reinstalling it will cause the issue again as well.

I can add to that confirmation. Uninstalling plasma-meta and drkonqi leads to the logout problem not occurring. Hopefully this will allow the upstream developers to fix the bug.

What likely happens is that something™ (for you seems qterminal) crashes on exit, drkonqi steps up to do its job, but that's not really helpful in this context because it cannot do its job after the session finished because it relies on WM and compositor to show it etcetc.

Thanks.

OK - I guess that uninstalling drkonqi is really a workaround rather than a solution but I can mark this as solved pending a proper fix upstream. Also I found this report, which could well be related to the issue in this thread: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=484864
Edit: There has been a flurry of activity in the upstream bug at https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=485011 including a link to the bug I added just above here. Also the newer posts upstream include: "Instead of uninstalling drkonqi these command should be enough to work around the issue:
systemctl --user stop drkonqi-coredump-pickup.service
systemctl --user mask drkonqi-coredump-pickup.service
Don't forget to execute this once the issue is fixed:
systemctl --user unmask drkonqi-coredump-pickup.service"
Hopefully this will now be fixed upstream, and reach the released updates before long.
