Steam fails to start after lib32-mesa update

So changing path & xdg+data_dirs didn't make a difference .

For further investigation zsh and especially oh-my-zsh are the next candidates .oh-my-zsh / zsh

run /usr/bin/bash in a terminal to switch to a temporary interactive bash shell and (try to) start steam from it.

In case steam works that way the next step is to remove oh-my-zsh and check if plain zsh can start steam succesfully .

Both disabling the CEF sandbox and exporting the variables don't help. After installing and starting openbox, I can run steam normally. The small issue is that with openbox installed, hyprland seemingly forgets my second monitor and hyprctl monitors only shows an "Unknown" monitor. Thankfully, uninstalling openbox and rebooting solves this issue.

hyprctl monitors only shows an "Unknown" monitor.

That's the simpledrm device and there's almost no way in hell that "installing openbox" has any impact on this.
Add "nvidia_drm.modeset=1" to the https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Kernel_parameters (the parameter will block the simpledrm as side-effect-hack, that's all we care about)

Sorry for the not replying for so long, life got in the way. Thanks for the kernel parameter, it helped. Sadly removing the AQ_DRM_DEVICES=/dev/dri/card1:/dev/dri/card0 from my hyprland.conf exports doesn't help.

The simplydumb device is supposed to get replaced by the actual drm drivers.
Please post your complete system journal for a boot w/o "nvidia_drm.modeset=1", eg.

Yes, Steam on my local "leo" user still does not start. This is really confusing because it starts normally on the new test user. I tried temporarily swapping my hyprland.conf for a fresh one, but that does not help. I'm stuck

Still limited to hyprland? Openbox not affected ? What about eg. sway or weston? Do you have xorg-xwayland installed?

Okay, so after some tinkering, these are my observations from today:

1) Steam runs on all display managers with my test account, but my leo account can run it only on openbox. On hyprland and sway it crashes in the same way, but on weston it can't connect to the X server (probably an issue with my weston configuration as I don't use it)
2) I do have xorg-xwayland installed, cos it's a dependency of hyprland
3) With all my packages updated, having "nvidia_drm.modeset=1" in the kernel parameters doesn't allow me to boot. https://0x0.st/8nc6.txt Here are the logs from that boot, the fatal error happens around line 1200.

Not sure how you usably run steam on that system at all?

I honestly have no idea what happened when updating the system. For now to continue playing steam I use the "archarchive" utility to roll back the system to 15.05 of this year to continue using steam. Then before testing any solutions I "sudo pacman -Syu" to the newest version, so steam runs on the 15.05 version but not on the current one. Something must have broken during my stupid temporary solution, after reinstalling linux-firmware and linux-firmware-amdgpu the system boots normally.

Edit: now after updating the whole system downgrading seems to no longer be an option as both linux-firmware and wlroots throw "_ exists in filesystem" errors when I try to downgrade

At least for linux-firmware it's because of the package split. Downgrading before that will require you to get rid of all the linux-firmware-* subpackages (linux-firmware-amdgpu specifically)

It's kinda odd that steam is only broken w/ your old user but only after the update and only only hyprland but not on X11.
You could incrementally poison the test user w/ files from your main $HOME (~/.config, ~/.local, ~/.cache - it's not gonna be ~/MyFiles/thisisnotmyporncollectiongoaway …) and see what group of files breaks this.
Likewise you could just try to empty ~/.cache and see whether it's just some stale cache…

Edit: for the latter, do that offline, ie. clear the cache of your old user when logged in as test user (and in doubt sudo)

Tried "poisoning" the test user with all my config files from ~/.config, that didn't stop steam from running. Cleaned the ~/.cache while logged out from the leo user, didn't help. Which files from ~/.local should I try to copy? It's a really big folder

steam and hyprland are the obvious contenders.
~/.local/state in case it's pipewire (though that'd be really odd given it's hyrland specific?)
