Countdown to "so when's 2.18 going to be in arch?"

Does it not have any priority, or is there only a single person working on it, or are there any problems with packaging up all the Gnome 2.18?

Compared to Xfce it seems Gnome is not that popular amongst the Arch devs...

they are working on it but there are some problems with it. It is supposed to be ready for testing by the end of the week, but that is only if they have resolved the problems by then wink

Besides that, it is only like a week or so since it has been released...

Any ideas what problems are observed? Perhaps devs could use some help?

Indeed. And even if us mortal users can't use gnome 2.18 yet, I think most us would appreciate at least some insight in what's happening. What's going wrong with the gnome releases?

That could be a very long wait, unfortunately. Wish it was already released, but for now I've to choose something to work with (pretty much tried them all, the DEs & WMs, and I like most of them, having now difficulties to decide).

I don't know, October isn't that far off. If you don't mind running a beta, you only have to wait until June.

It's not even an alpha yet. I got only kwrite to work, everything else looks like symlink to crash handler

Re: Gnome 2.18 is out ...

Tried the available KDE4 packages a few weeks ago, only could get Dolpin to start. I don't know from where the KDE devs want to magically let a beta appear in June, but I really can not believe they are going to release anything in October. I'll definitely keep an eye on KDE4, but I need something to work with now, a beta version is not an option for me, and I am really considering now going for Gnome 2.18 (still not 100% convinced, but still playing around with the VMware image, will have to wait for the official Arch packages anyway).

If you are used to KDE (or WinXP), Gnome feels unfamiliar, because it's different. I think it depends how easily you can adapt, more playing around with it helps. I am just installing VMware on my laptop, to be able to play with Gnome 2.18 from the Foresight VMware image on that machine as well. The more I use it, the more I like it, and I believe using Gnome can lead to more productivity (I am not that tempted to poke around configuring it to death any more).

Yes it does, I don't really know why, but everything just looks so smooth, the GTK+ look and feel somehow is much more pleasing to the eye, than with QT.

Re: Gnome 2.18 is out ...

I'd be a lot happier if they did some upgrading in the multiple monitor support department....

It's the only thing keeping me from using Gnome, it's stupid when it comes to dual monitors.

Replace metacity with openbox

What's the problem with it? In the Gnome 2.18 VMware image there is a GUI for configuring dual-monitor-support, it's in System -> System-Management -> Screen (that's translated from German, so may be named similar in other languages), although I can't tell, if this is Foresight Linux specific, or belongs to the standard Gnome release (I can't test it anyway, because I don't have a dual monitor setup).

Try qtcurve style for kde and you won't say that again. You can also try domino

If those themes do not hide a lot of the buttons from the user interface, and then propperly align the remaining widgets (never seen a qt theme do that), I guess I would still say the same as Master One.

It's simply retarded. It should be smart enough to place new windows on the screen where the mouse cursor is located.  Every other intelegent dual monitor supporting DE does this.  Plus it's just stupid on the size of windows.  Windows open on the monitor with the taskbars, then if they open on the other side while open on the taskbar side (happens with firefox a lot) if they are both maximized, the one on the monitor that has no taskbars will not be full screen, but will instead have the same dimensions as the firefox on the screen with the taskbars on it.  Plus, no multiple monitor walpaper support (or much of it aside from tiling it across of stretching.) Those don't really cut it for me as "supporting". That's what's wrong with it...

I'll look into this replacing metacity with openbox though... Might prove to be interesting. Aside from that, the only other problem I have with Gnome is the task icons for Amarok sometimes don't go in. It's stupid with QT apps. I know Kde has no problms with Gtk apps. *shrugs*

One day may not be enough to get used to it, but of course it depends on what you expect from a DE. I am actually making up my decision, if KDE or Gnome to get work done, which also includes the decision which apps to use. Both environments have their advantages and disadvantages, but even as a long time KDE user I see no problem to getting fully used to the Gnome way of handling things.

I expect: good looking, stability, usability and no need with searching programs to make some work. Unfortunatelly, concerning to last issue KDE wins definitelly. I hope I'll find quickly what I need when it comes to it.
