Re: [SOLVED](?) iwlwifi crashes randomly, sometimes fails to start on boot

Well apparently, even setting it off didn't solve...

I plugged my 4k monitor, and boom.
I will note that plasmashell did seem to soft reboot, so maybe what happened here is some sort of ripple effect?

Re: [SOLVED](?) iwlwifi crashes randomly, sometimes fails to start on boot

Although, this crash feels more related to me plugging my TV than what I had before, I haven't had any other crash happening at random since I disabled power save...

2nd link below where? If you mean the boot menu, I'm using systemd-boot, where I only have archlinux and archlinux-fallback

Re: [SOLVED](?) iwlwifi crashes randomly, sometimes fails to start on boot

Yes I checked, it was off.

I would try rescue.target, but I have not set a root password, and as such, it doesn't let me in. I did try to manually init to bash, where I could switch back to graphical target, but I couldn't call iw.

In multi-user, power save is on.
Graphical is the default, so we know it is on.

I will note that I was met, once again, with wifi crashing during boot, but that's after I unplugged my TV and quickly entered reboot, at which point I got met with a stop job for 1min40-something sec.

I literally just now got a wifi crash again, with power save off... twice.

Now, this is interesting...
I was spying on the journal to catch any crash live, and this happened:

The wifi was not interrupted here, I can still refresh web pages and send the present reply.

EDIT: I'm still getting wifi crashes, but at least I can see that they don't occur immediately when it says "Microcode SW".

I think the moment I get notified for the crash is when it says "wlan0: deauthenticating from 9c:c9:eb:fb:35:35 by local choice (Reason: 3=DEAUTH_LEAVING)"

Re: [SOLVED](?) iwlwifi crashes randomly, sometimes fails to start on boot

The firmware crashes and causes a reset, eventually causing

Nov 18 10:29:18 tuf-arch-toto kernel: Hardware became unavailable during restart.

at which point NM accepts the connection to be gone.

Try to boot grml.org and stress the network a bit w/

wget -nv --show-progress -O /dev/null "http://speedtest.frankfurt.linode.com/1GB-frankfurt.bin"

and see whether you can make the NIC reset there.
If not (or you prefer to test first) only boot the multi-user.target, connect to the wifi AP and run the test there (the point is to get the "normal" plasma userspace stack out of the equation since we've to assume that it's neither kernel nor firmware)

Re: [SOLVED](?) iwlwifi crashes randomly, sometimes fails to start on boot

Ah! ...

I tested to see if I still have this issue on a live usb.
EndeavourOS, Linux Mint... They all crashed.

And considering I had some struggles with Windows (not as bad; just the wifi crashing and restarting whenever I switched from an ADSL to a 4G)...

I think it was a hardware issue all along.

EDIT: Doing the stress test you said rn...

Have you tried to completely power the system down (cut it from all power sources, remove the battery etc) for some minutes?

I have not. I'm doing the stress test yet, but after that, yeah I'll do a hard power reset.

Re: [SOLVED](?) iwlwifi crashes randomly, sometimes fails to start on boot

So it downloaded the entire gigabyte no problem, and then it was just not connecting to the internet anymore, and journalctl was reporting nothing. That's cool...

Doing the hard reset right now.
As I do, I'm finding out that the wifi chip can be replaced. I should keep that in mind.

I let it off maybe 10-15 minutes, so I'm booting it up again. It took a while to show the ASUS logo, so I'd say I successfully powered it down.
I'll mark this as solved, until the wifi crashes again, if it does.

Re: [SOLVED](?) iwlwifi crashes randomly, sometimes fails to start on boot

So... Things have somewhat improved, but it's not fully gone.

But at least, now I know it's a hardware problem.

Does it matter whether you run the system on AC or battery?

It doesn't seem so.

Then again, I'm on AC 95% of the time, because the ASUS TUF Gaming F15 has this annoying thing where the CPU becomes underpowered on battery to the point where everything becomes visibly laggy.
