Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hello guys smile

I've been using Arch as my development machine for quite some time (I'm a software developer), but for my desktop I was still searching something new... and the last 2 years I've been on OpenSUSE. Now I gave a go to Arch for my desktop, too, I want to see if I can get out of this some nice machine.

I really like pacman and clarity of config scripts, so I hope I can stay here for quite a long time big_smile

Yesterday I've installed it on my home machine, today I will install all the desktop stuff... btw, I've had some strange fight with installing grub - it got lost with a device map, and I had to enter grub's console after rebooting and search for its files on partitions... strange - although I have a few HDDs - both IDE and SATA, so it wasn't easy, really wink

Nevermind - welcome, community! cool

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hello all,

I've been using Arch for a mere couple of weeks and I'm hooked like a geek on coffee. I was born and raised on Unix back in the day of the AT&T 3B1. I administer Unix/Linux/M$ at work, but use Arch as my main OS at home. Like most of you, I've tried almost every distro out there - and will keep doing so because it's interesting. I've been a big fan of FreeBSD for years - for some reason it just clicks with me. I've used the various Ubuntu-based distro's for their ease and multimedia-friendliness. But what I was really looking for was something inbetween. I wanted the total customizable OS like FreeBSD, with the systemwide compatibility of the Debian/Ubuntu groups. And that's when I found Arch...

Arch makes you really learn your OS and rewards you for doing so. You'll get stumped from time to time, but there's plenty of docs and the wiki here is awesome. The forums have been very helpful too, and I've tried to pay it forward.

Big thanks to everyone who's ever helped someone use their Arch. It makes a world of difference.

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

hey hey...

I've been playing with Linux for about 6 years, desktops for only the last 3 years. I replaced windows as my primary Desktop OS about a year in.  First one I found suitable was vector, then zenwalk, and now Arch, seems like a natural progression.  I had shorts stays with many of the other distros I was really into freeBSD as a desktop enjoyed the function and ease of use as posted by the user above me.  Theres always a lot to learn in these open source communities and I found the arch install and wiki's to be a very helpful resource and I have yet to ask something that wasn't already documented or answered.

Great job, to all those involved.

I was prompted to play with arch after reading a positive review on distrowatch about a month or so ago, and have been tinkering ever since.

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hello Everyone!!

I have know about Linux since 1996 when my father (computer science graduate) started showing me C++ and stuff like that. I never really got into it much then but I always played around with the novice Linux distro (Suse6 - 9) I saw that it wasn't really big on the games which at that time I was so I kinda left it alone. Now in late 08' I came across Ubuntu and I guess it opened Pandora's box.  Now I don't run windows at all, each pc I own runs some sort of Linux distro.

Arch is really cool, but cause it is completely configurable from the start it has pulled my interest 100x more then any other.  Right now I am running it on Vbox in Crunch Bang but I am on the market for a laptop that will be my main Arch Run (also going to be my main pc).

So I hope this long road of modding, patching, and scripting will be fun cause I am hooked.

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hello o/

I am pretty new to Linux in general. I ran it on a computer for two weeks once when my primary computer broke and I couldn't find my XP install disc, and to be honest I didn't get on very well with it. This time I decided to just jump in the deep end and play with Arch in VirtualBox so I could figure out what's going on. I've even managed to install X :psyduck:

So, yes. That's about it I suppose.

I need to stop being distracted and get on with my proper work ¬_¬

Hey people, I've been using Arch for just over 3 months now, and loving it.

I used Debian and Ubuntu before it, but felt those distros were far too bloated. A friend introduced me to Arch, I installed it, and never looked back.

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hey everyone!  I'm actually in the midst of installing Arch as we speak, (well basically installing it the way i want, the base is actually installed.)  I have to say, the installation was quite a breeze, I used to run CentOS and attempted gentoo way to many times on my laptop, (and never succeeded).  I can't wait to see what Arch and its users have in store!

Well thats all, speak to you all soon hehe

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Good evening ladies and lads. Installed Arch yesterday for the second time (first was on a virtual machine last year). I've been an Ubuntu user for about a year and was looking for a more light & powerful distro, and found it so far in Arch.

At the moment I'm an ameteur web designer, and I'll be using Arch to do that too.

I've been a member of the Ubuntu forums for a while and heard the Arch community is a tad less friendly, but from what I've seen so far that's totally false. Looking forward to mixing with you folks wink

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hello Archers!
I am new to Arch; but I am not new to linux. I started my linux journey with Ubuntu almost 4 years ago. I have tried most of the popular distros. I mostly use Ubuntu, Debian, Zenwalk, and Slackware. Slackware is currently my favorite distro and has been for some time.

I like to install new (at least to me!) distros from time to time in order to learn more about linux and test my skills. I have read a lot about Arch over the years, and everything I have read said it was an excellent distro if you like to roll up your sleeves and set up your own system.

So I installed Arch using the ftp net install to my desktop. I followed the excellent Beginners Guide to install. When I had questions about something I consult the vast resources of the Arch wiki to get more info. I now have a fast and beautiful Arch system using the Gnome desktop! I like the way Arch lets you install only what you want and gives you complete control. Pacman seems to work at least as well (if not better!) than Debian's APT.

Anyway, I just wanted to say hello and a big thanks to all the talented developers who put together the fast and fine distro. Also a big thanks to everyone who devoted their time toward putting together the vast body of knowledge that is the Arch wiki. You are to be congratulated!

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

A warm UK welcome to all Archers,

I've been using Linux for a few years (of the Ubuntu flavour) and have been thinking of trying Arch for awhile now.

I'd heard that a bit of a steep learning curve was required, and since Ubuntu has been doing such a good job for me, I've been too lazy to take the plunge. I did have a go on my backup pc last year but when I got an error message as early as the partitioning stage last year I put the manual back in the drawer.

However when a distro peeks your curiosity, the desire to investigate it further is like an itch that has to be scratched. So today I had another go at Arch ...and this time a successful one! And I've been happily surprised at how smooth and straightforward it has been (thanks in no small part to the excellent "beginners users guide"). It has indeed been a learning process, but of the good kind.

It's early days, and I've still got plenty of things to learn, however I'm looking forward to my journey with Arch Linux.

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hello to everyone!
I'm Giuseppe, a long time Linux user, but not an expert/guru/hacker/etc. I started trying linux in 1995, with a Slackware and at that time subscribed to the linux counter. However I didn't really used my Slackware installation, I was too inexperienced. It was only between 1998/99 that I completely stopped using Windows when I installed a Redhat. Since that time, I have only used Linux. From Redhat to Mandrake circa 2001, then in 2005 I switched to Ubuntu. Now I'm trying ArchLinux. I have installed it on my first laptop, a Compal HEL81, while on the second laptop (HP TX 1350el) I still have Ubuntu 8.10.
Following the wiki, forum and googling I've been able to get a working GNOME desktop "a la Ubuntu".
A few problems I've encountered:
1) networkmanager didn't worked at first, it was fixed when dbus was updated to 1.2.4.4permissive-1. I suppose the "permissive" word in the version says it all.
2) bluetooth doesn't work properly, but after trying some fix suggested in the forum I realized that it is my dongle that has a broken support in current bluez version (regardless of the distribution, it doesn't work in Ubuntu too).
3) dkms is missing, there is an outdated package in AUR and the source is missing.
My first impression about Arch: it's very nice and it works fine for me. I've (re)discovered some things about Linux I was going to forget, and learned some more detail about dbus and hal. Also I like the packaging system really on the KISS principle. I've always learned to make packages for the distributions I've used, so I know rpm/deb packaging. IMHO a packaging system should be a mean to have a clean system, not an end in itself, as seems to be the case with Debian.

Hi everyone. Switched from Ubuntu to Arch about half a week ago, after learning about Fluxbox and not liking any of the pre-packaged Fluxbox-based distros. I'm really liking The Arch Way!

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hi all.

Pedro from Portugal here, better known as palobo. I made the full switch to linux about a year ago, until then I'd tried it on and off, more off than on...

Like most of linux newbies, I started off with the "friendly" distros, OpenSuse, Ubuntu, Fedora, Linux Mint (current distro), but lately I'm feeling the need to learn more and better linux skills.

Having read various favorable reviews about Arch Linux, headed over to the wiki and read "The Arch Way", WOW! Just what I was looking for. This should be the perfect linus lesson I thought, and so downloaded the net install and am preparing to install Arch.

I'm one of those linux cinverts that is always trying to convert other so hopefully I'll manage to get some more friends over into Arch Linux as well.

Anyway... HI ALL!

Cheers,
P.

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hi there,

While I wouldn't consider myself new to the world of Linux, I decided it was time for a change, after getting just a little too comfortable with Ubuntu, I realized they did a lot of stuff for you that, while great for people who don't care what's going on inside their computer, left me at a bit of a disadvantage. I tried Arch once before (with disastrous results thanks to a mistype in the partition editor), but it wasn't until I realized I needed a mobile terminal to SSH into my server, that I decided to give Arch another go. I'm REALLY liking it, especially the AUR community repositories. It's probably the best thing about Arch. big_smile

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

OK, my turn, another Portuguese in the forums, not new to linux (first one i ever tried was mandrake 6 i think), been using the OS for about 4 years in a row, currently owning only one machine running XP for some games (which I'll probably ditch and install Arch), and a laptop with Arch on it as well.
I have to say I really feel great about this, I love everything about it, ABS, AUR, the forums. Previously, I was on Slack, then tried Ubuntu, Vector and none of them have the same feel that Arch does.
I'm happy I didn't give up the first time things went wrong, both when I tried running Linux for the first time, and when I tried configuring Arch for the first time.

Never going back to MS again. Going to get me a next-gen console for gaming, and that's that.

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Howdy,

I'm Adæmox, I'm male, in my mid-twenties, and I live in the USA part of the Pacific Northwest. It's sweet!

I've been messing around with Linux on and off since high school, but it never really clicked for me until recently. I've really grown fond of Xfce and have been messing around with Xubuntu. But, I'm now thinking about making a change and moving to Arch (in fact, I'm going to be changing and hoping that Arch will stick for me).

The main reason for the change is that the more and more I use Linux the less and less I like some of the configuration options that get defaulted upon you when using Ubuntu derivatives. It's definitely a great distro and I likely wouldn't have real interest in Linux if it wasn't for Ubuntu (or OpenSuSE), but more and more of each of my setups is spent undoing configurations that are default in Ubuntu (this is especially true in K and Xubuntu which seem to be the redheaded step-children of the Ubuntu family).

Also, the i686 optimizations, and the rolling releases definitely caught my attention. As well as the apparent dedication to KISS via everything, especially the terminal.

I've been reading a lot of about Arch the last few days, and the more I read the better it sounds (unlike many things, which sound fantastic at first, but quickly loose their appeal after reading first hand accounts or what not). So here's hoping!

Cheers,
Adæmox

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Well!

I'm a happy camper - Arch wifi works splendidly using ZyDas 1211rw USB adapter, and I just completed the install of the latest nvidia upgrade when installing xorg.  nvidia is great. When nvidia installed nvidia created xorg.conf and left me with very little to do.

I used both xorg and the xterm test procedures with great success.  Next will be -- load desktop environments and additional applications.

I truly love the Arch way, so hello to all the great Archers out there.

cheers

Hi people,
I am Miguel from Portugal.

I have Installed Arch in middle 2007 (2007.08 - Don't Panic), but I returned to Debian. This year (January) I bought a laptop, I remove Microsoft Windows and all partitions and I install Arch on entire disk :-)

At this moment, I'm a happy Linux/Arch user, and I dont think change the distro :-) (for a while)
