Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hello everyone,
I have been using arch for almost a year and was watching the forum as guest.
Now I had to register because of problems with automounting an USB drive and I didn't find a solution in the forums or the wiki, so I thought it would be a good occasion to great the community.

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Okay. It is easy when you know what to do and if the wiki provides the right answer for you (and if you can find that answer).
So I started out with Crunchbang(used it for a long time and loved the simplicity). But I couldn't get QT and some other program(that I don't even remember now what was) to work together.
So I switched to Madbox it was ubuntu based so you know that everything works right out of the box. But you could only get that in 32bit and Spotify only works with 64bit versions. So tried arch because I was ingtrigued by the high level of customizing that it offers(and also the community seems awesome). During the installation, Grub just didn't want to install, so after 2 tries with Grub I decided to use syslinux. Well that worked. Then it came down to customizing my system. I installed openbox first of, but then i couldn't figure out how to boot openbox. Meanwhile I had found another distro called Archbang. I installed that right away, I got everything I needed with the exception of a crappy file manager. Then I started to pump into issues trying to replace it with thunar. And while doing that I found out that the arch community actually frown upon the archbang community, which I don't understand wince it is the exact same as long as you remove the mirror from archbang, you don't even have to worry about direction the arch-community might take.
I then turned back to arch again. For some reason grub installed without any problems this time, might be because I chose to go with GPT instead of MBR.
I then installed openbox and then alongisde it I installed lightdm. Now it would boot into openbox. Then i installed tint and then I encountered my next dilemma. Getting wireless to work. I had only used wireless so far, so it baffled me why it wouldn't connect. Sometimes when i had fired enough randome netctl commands it would work. Anyway after I finally succeded in getting the nm-applet it would work just fine.
Also auto-login. Why was that so fucking hard to set up? Maybe because I was on 2 different wiki pages, 2 different forums before I finally found the correct wiki page, that told me to add an autologin user group.

Okay my rant is over. I grant that a lot might have been my being 'stupid', unlucky or inpatient.  But I have a system that works now. I only need to customize, openbox, tint, conky, lightdm and then install all the programs I am going to need. I am happy that it works. And I actually excited to start working with this OS.

So. Hi archies! I am now an arch-user!

Wrong and wrong.  We do not frown upon the Archbang community or upon any other community surrounding an Arch fork; more power to them.  I think you are also wrong on the second point -- but I cannot prove it and I don't care.

These are the Arch Linux forums and are intended to be the canonical reference for Arch Linux.  As a moderator, we disallow any tangential information about forks that may, or may not, be correct.  It is not our task to track the differences introduced by forks, so we respectfully direct questions about Arch forks to the appropriate forums.

Anyway, welcome to Arch Linux.   Merging with the Official Hello Everyone thread

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hello fellow arch users!

I've been running Arch for a few months now. Still getting the hang of things. I was a long user of Windows, but I was always annoyed by the lack of transparency. I never got a sense of what was going on under the hood, or why problems would happen. I'd just have to cross my fingers and hope nothing bad ever happened. I'm pretty sure that's a bad preventative measure for problems.

I started testing the Linux waters without much initial success. In every distro I used, the GUI tools weren't helpful, nor were they good substitutes for anything I'd seen in elsewhere. I didn't understand what the gaps in my knowledge were, so I had no way to just look stuff up and read. Acclamation was painfully slow.

Then I heard about ArchLinux: that it was for seasoned Linux users looking to expand their knowledge and abilities. I intended to install it as an experiment, hoping that some grit and effort could help me fill in some of those gaps. For me, Installation did require some grit and effort. However, what filled in so many gaps was the fantastic documentation. Not one distro has been as convenient or easy (for me) as Arch has. It far exceeded my expectations and I now primarily use Arch on my desktop.

Has anyone else felt that, despite what others say, Arch is actually much EASIER to use than other distros, and is even a fantastic first experience with Linux? Installing other distros felt like landing in a crater: within a small area, I could wander freely, but as soon as I wanted to leave that area, I was besieged by problems-- mostly my lack of experience. Using Arch felt like climbing a hill with a nice, paved, yellow-brick road to the top.

In sum, I'm loving Arch, and plan to use it for the foreseeable future. I'd appreciate it if someone could point me in the right direction on getting involved in the community: what needs doing, and what would I need to learn to do it?

Hello. I'm as new as they come and I am here to spam your newbie corner.
The reason for linux is longer than I care to write after the experience with 'captcha', the reason for Arch is that it supports wifi from the start (I tried whole one other distribution before).
So, here we go.

Hello everyone!
This is Hillol. I am using Arch for 3 months now. I came from a Win7/8 and then Linux mint background. But, I have to say, I am absolutely loving the Arch way. Life is so much more comfortable in Arch! I now think remorsefully - why didn't I move to Arch earlier!

Cheers! :cool

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hello everyone!
I have been using Arch for around half a year now and I really enjoy it. My compliments to all the developers, maintainers and of course everyone who has worked on the Arch Wiki. It must be the best resource on any operating system ever, great work!

Personally I come from an Ubuntu background, but I definitely find the Arch way more appealing. Having so much control over an operating system was overwhelming at first but magnificient as soon as I got used to it. I am not sure if my programming skills are sufficient to contribute to the community but I shall give my very best.

Anyway, thanks again to everyone who has made this possible!

Hello everyone!
Arch has been the most smooth and enjoyable experience out of all distros.
I can't see myself moving to another distro forever(at least as a desktop).

I finally decided to join because I felt like I've been missing out on all the interesting discussions.

Many thanks to founders and maintainers of this awesome distro for creating it and keeping it so great.

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hello.

Switched from Windows to Linux about 5 months ago after I got tired of things randomly breaking.  I started by experimenting with Ubuntu and Mint, eventually settled on Mint/KDE.

But I still checked out the options periodically, and after a while I gave Antergos a spin in a VM and was impressed by the speed (I gave it about a quarter of my processing power and it was running faster than the host).  I decided to try Arch proper to learn a bit more about Linux along the way.  Painful process (mostly trying to get a desktop environment to work, they kept crashing and I kept thinking it had something to do with the specific DE before I realized it was Nvidia Optimus and installed Bumblebee), but well worth it.

Now that I do have it set up it feels much easier to use than other distros (easier to tinker with, no more difficult to use now that I've got it all set up).  I definitely enjoy how easy it is to experiment with stuff; that let me find my favorite DE (LXDE) more easily without having to keep reinstalling my OS (I didn't know you could download a DE on its own before I set up Arch).  Another big plus is having a better idea of what's wrong when something doesn't work, as I've seen a lot more of what goes on behind the scenes than I did with Ubuntu and Mint.  It's also just very satisfying knowing how your OS works and being able to work without a GUI when necessary.  And Pacman is awesome, easier to use and faster than APT.

I can't see any reason I'd ever want to switch, especially because if I did I could probably just go ahead and fix it.

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hey everyone!

I've been using Linux for over two years now, but not on a really high level and I felt like Ubuntu variants are not going to be enough anymore, so I wanted to get my hands dirty with some customizations and command line usage. Not having enough knowledge to fully set up my workspace was also irritating me to no end.
So far I'm loving Arch, especially the wiki, but it will take some more getting used to before I move it out from Virtualbox/KVM.
I'll try not to annoy anyone with too many noob question :3

Hello people!

I have been using the Ubuntu variants for quite some time... I ascended just a few days back. I am always looking for new releases and want to try out latest features. So to me when I first discovered archlinux it was like holy grail to me.

Looking forward to a great experience at both the OS and here at the forums!

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hello everyone.  My name is Cody, and I have been sober for 2 days, wait...

Anyways, I am going to be entering my 5th year of college this fall.  I changed from Chemical Engineering to Computer Science last year.  I strongly believe that Arch Linux has played a big role in that decision.  I love the customization associated with it, and I love the community.  Although this is my first post, I have followed these forums for 4 years.  I started with Ubuntu my senior year of high school (5 years ago ish).  Then after a year of Ubuntu, I decided it was time to do some soul-searching, so to speak.  I tried Debian (Pure Debian, I.E. not Ubuntu / Mint), Mint, and Fedora, but decided that none of them suited my needs adequately.  Arch Linux gives me a sensation of customizability that I have looked for since I was 9 years old.

Other Linux distros are like renting an apartment.  You get a full house, furnished and all, and a restricting landlord that will tell you what you can and can't do.  Some distros are even in a home owners association.  Conversely, Arch Linux is like being given a plot of land and a foundation -- The rest is up to you.  It allows you to build up your house from the bottom up, making sure that everything is where you want it to be and looks and feels the way you want it to.

For me, that is what I want from a computer.  I mean, I spend the time and order each part separately when I am building the computer and make it look, physically, exactly the way I want it to look.  Why would I not want to get the same thing from my Operating System?  Additionally, this community is the glue that will keep me on Arch.  The documentation is incredible, and there is a friendly, helpful aura that floats around anything Arch.

Great being apart of the community!

Hello World! big_smile
Yay! Finally I registered myself at the Arch bbs... smile
Seriously, I started using this wonderful Linux distribution a while back, years before the transition to systemd... But my laptop bricked and I could not keep on using Arch.
I never really left Arch, I kept myself in the arch-dev-public Digest mailing list... Every now and then looking foward something in the Arch Wiki (the best on Linux, IMHO). I just left The Arch Way for a while, installing an Arch-based distro called Chakra... Anyway, this is a long story.
By the way, I've been trying out other philosophies, and I found out that the traditional release model of Operating Systems isn't for me. In another hand, a rolling release model fits me very well, it's dynamic, it's active, it's more related to the way that life works, IMHO.
Well, I'm Antonio, I'm Brazilian, and Arch Linux rocks. wink

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

I just wanted to say hello to the community, installing this fine linux was the best (nerdiest) installation I have ever performed. Normally I am use to at least a TUI.

I have installed Arch as I am bored of the normal Ubuntu/Debian distros out there and want to learn something more advanced. As I have heard: "Install Debian, learn Debian. Install arch, learn linux. Already this had proven to be true, even registering on these forum led me to a command I have never used (what are you guys asking me to pipe my uname and time to sha256?)

I don't know what my knowledge level really is within Linux in general, but I like to consider myself intermediate.

I will admit, I installed arch because I wanted a truly lightweight OS, that I can control. I wanted something that was actually clean at first at least, but what I am going to be trying to do is run minecraft (the actual game, not a server) on this with my GTX 460. Windows has too much ram usage and I know I can lower the ram to what I wish to be running *TRULY* in Linux.

Ram isn't the main issue, bottle-necking or something is causing my computer to run sluggish on windows, and this is even Windows 10 I am speaking of.

I haven't even checked if grub with os probe did its job on finding my windows install on the first part of this drive. It listed 3 of them in the grub menu.

TLDR; Hello! I am new to arch linux, and just wanted to say hi!

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hello everyone,

Windows user for about 10 years, mostly as a teenager. Then I heard about Linux and its charms, I tried Ubuntu and Debian. Wasnt impressed. They're like re-doing a more stable (stabler, stablier,... Umm, you know what I mean, right? What's the right word?) version of Windows. Great job, but didn't impress me. So I got back to Windows for 2 more years.
Some months ago, I was bored and decided to try Arch. AND IT HIT ME LIKE A HAMMER! Damnnnnn! This is what I think about when I think about Linux. I can hardly imagine a life with Windows again. Arch was easy to install, the concept is clear and the philosophy is crystal. I just feel it fits me perfectly. And this forum helped me so much, I've been reading so many threads and now that I have a problem, I register and post. I wanna say, thank you guys, for making this wonderful distro real.
The only minus: Photoshop & Adobe products, but it's Linux' problem, not Arch. I can't convince my girlfriend to use Linux, as long as she cant use Photoshop here. Her Windows laptop gives me cancer when I think about how it's running. big_smile
Anyway, have a nice day everyone!
