Giggle-snort. I don't do smilies, so that's the best I can think of at the moment. You just pointed out another huge reason many of us use arch, the absence of a price tag.

So this is my story:

I started with Linux about a year and a half ago with Ubuntu 14.04LTS, and then 16.04LTS. Then I when to fedora 24, and then upgraded to fedora 25. Then I moved to Linux Mint 18 only to upgrade to Linux Mint 18.1. While I was using Ubuntu I began to program and I kept up with it. By the time I got to Linux Mint I was using PyQt5 to make GUIs. And then I found that Ubuntu (and therefore Linux Mint) did not offer QtWebEngine so no Youtube in any custom browsers. So I decided to move to Arch Linux.

I installed it on my laptop one night and I liked immediately. The wiki is well-written and concise, The AUR had everything I needed and more. I installed KDE Plasma 5.9, and use PyCharm as my IDE. I have Opera as a browser and I really like it. So I decided to install it on my custom desktop. I also had a lot of hard drives lying around. So I put them in and my home partition (once I buy some more power cables) will at least 3TB because I was able to set up and configure LVM relatively easily. So no more distro hopping! Arch Linux Is awesome!

P.S. I know I might get some grit over this but I use the systemd boot loader because I figured it I was going to have its bloated butt on board I might as well use it.

Hello Everyone

My name is Haroon, I'm from Germany and in a apprenticeship to be a IT specialist. I only had contact with windows until now. I though it would be benifitial in my field to have some decent experience with GNU/Linux in general. So I switched to Arch for my home pc. I mainly used windows at home for gaming. I read about GPU-Passtrough a few years back and I though that was really neat.

A month ago I bough a new SSD and I decided too switch to Arch and since then I'm trying to get Arch to work properly. Recently I upgraded my GPU and since then my installation went total nuts, completely useless.

The resources are well documented, even though it's a bit hard for a complete newbie to understand everything that is going on, but I learned a lot since I switched to Arch.

So I hope to get my system properly running soon and start enjoying everything the Linux world has to offer.

Welcome to the forum. Aside from replacing/swapping hard drives, I have no experience with custom hardware such as upgrading GPU's. That said, I think there's a good chance you can get the help you need here.

Hi Fred, welcome aboard. Don't know why you'd get grit (I assume you mean negative comments) over which boot loader you use. If it works for you, use it. Isn't it great that you get to choose?

Hello all. I've been distro hopping between different xfce distributions ever since catching the Windows 10 bug/virus a few months ago. Was a bit nervous when doing my first dual boot but eventually found using Linux to be easier than the former. My first distro was Xubuntu 16.10 before moving on to Linux Mint 18.1 xfce, then Manjaro betas for a little while and just about everything else in between. Finally decided to do my first manual partitioning with Antergos so I'm somewhat of a stowaway in Arch but really like how fast it feels compared to other distros I've tried so far alongside the ease of installing up to date software through Pamac. Just hoping not to get overwhelmed with too many different Arch issues over the long run even thought the experience has been mostly smooth so far.

You should be aware of that Antergos isn't Arch linux. You are of course welcome here. But if you want support for Antergos you have to use their forums.

I'm coming from Debian world ( I am from Serbia, actually D: ) and I don't like derrivates. However, I must admit .. Crunchbang linux was the one that totally converted me to what I am today. Irony.
I tried Archbang as well, as I am Openbox fan, but that never worked for some reason. It was me, probably. Not the archbang distro, nevermind.

When Cruchbang ceased to exist, I have embraced pure (netinstall) Debian. And didn't go wrong. However, when something needs to be done, and You need help online, almost 90% of search results are referring to - ArchWiki or Arch forums.
Be it Debian or anything else. So, after few years hanging with Debian (wheezy, jessie), during past week to be precise, I have dd'ed 2Gb pen drive with Archlinux ISO version 232 ... and started.

I am surprised with the outcome.
101% positively surprised.

Now I am wondering.... which is actually more stable *(I prefer Debian stable over testing/sid) ....
Archlinux with linux-lts as rolling distro or Debian - stable ?

Archlinux is sitting on my hard drive for no longer than one week.
Debian is well known host for years ...

And guess what ?
I already see and use Archlinux as primary one.

No, I will never abandon Debian, but I already have embraced Arch philosophy and simply can't help my self.
Didn't loaded Jessie for a few days already ... and that tells everything, doesn't it ?

In Debian parlance, "stable" refers to the fixed and unchanging APIs and operation of the system rather than it being "uncrashable" and bug-free; by contrast, Arch changes APIs like a woman changes clothes

Debian stable branch is excellent choice for developers who need to focus on their actual work, and forget about everything else.
And...what can I say.. ? I like `femles` of all kind. Real ones, more than - work, work, work.

Hi all !

Where to start, well, I started with Ubuntu 10.04 back in 2010 after a friend showed me the ease of recovering files on a screwed up Windows partition, using Linux.

I stayed with Ubuntu because of how basic using that distro was was; point click command. At the start of 2017 I felt it was about time I learn more then copy and pasting command lines to get by. I had tried to move past Ubuntu once and worked with ArchBang a little in 2012 but required a friend's help to maintain.

So here I am! I always knew of Archlinux and finally made the plung. In the past week I have installed and gone through xorg to gnome and configuring fstab to have my boot, mnt and home on different partitions. I have managed to break it all and require learning to fix it! Discovered AUR and have chrome up and running.

I am at the beginning of the journey, thanks for having me. I hope to contribute one day !

@tux.lector, like you, I am a long time Debian user who also uses Arch and loves it. Other parts of your introduction hit some familiar notes, as well. I generally prefer "pure" distros over derivatives, but curiosity has led me to some pretty good spin-offs like Crunchbang (rest in peace).

Arch and Debian are my daily drivers, and I can't imagine doing without either of them, but I think Arch is more fun. Oh, and I'm a happy OpenBox user.

@strawspulledatrandom, isn't it great that you can use a linux distro to fix broken windows? I don't think it works the other way around...

The Arch community is peppered with stories containing the phrase, "I broke it, but figured out how to fix it", often followed with, "thanks to the forums" or "thanks to the wiki".

Anyway, welcome aboard, both of you. Have fun with Arch.

If you're talking laptops, I can't think of a stronger combo. If you're talking PC's, maybe. I have one old PC that has two hard drives. /sda is dual boot debian and arch. /sdb is arch only. I know, it's a sickness, but I don't want to get well. Six years of linux has turned me into a hobbyist/tinkerer/collector.

May we both enjoy Arch and Debian for many years to come. Upgrade your Arch partition often, and don't forget to read the Front Page news https://www.archlinux.org and the forums first. Things sometimes break after upgrades. I have not had anything break that was un-fixable in Arch in my 2+ years of use.

If you want to try some, be sure to get help from someone who knows pu-erh tea as it's tough to recognize the real stuff when buying online: there are a lot of forgeries of Menhai teas that are garbage.

Hey all,

So last week i posted a thread on this forum calling for help,
i got a little upset with the way some of you reacted saying that "architect is not arch linux" and such things.
Architect failed on my yesterday, and i tought it was time to show that i actually can create my very own arch linux installation
and i did, and i love it. the way how you connect the pieces, from partitioning the drive to installed the desktop environment, i loved every single bit of it.
i am proud to call myself part of the Arch community and i hope to get help and help here often.

Archlinux is the only distro from which I was actually able to connect to my hidden SSID which is firewall/mac-filtered + wpa2 enterprise protected - without problems, without LAN (LAN is disabled) from live boot in tty1.
And that's the point where - me - immediately fells in love with Arch power. Debian Wheezy didn't even had an option for wifi net-install. Debian Jessie does, but .. there's no way to find hidden SSID (or at least I don't know how).
