Hello to all,
My name is Roger (martinium), I am a new Arch user that just finished installing the base system two days ago. I decided to try arch because I have a pretty cutting edge pc and the other distros I tried just weren't as fast and my Win 7 x64 setup. I have distro hopped before looking to find the right distro that I would like and had pretty much settled on Linux Mint which is fantastic, but it just felt sluggish even tho it is quick and stable since it is based on Ubuntu.
As the true geek that I am I like to learn and understand the inner workings of my system and love the freedom that Linux provides even tho its more work since there isn't much support from manufacturers as compared to Windows. So anyways after I installed Arch I see that it is very minimal which was pretty cool and simple at the same time. I immediately thought that it basically meant I would have to customize everything to my specifications which is awesome and meant no bloat, but was also a bit scary since I still consider myself kind of new to Linux.
Following the wiki's excellent instructions and loving pacman I set up my base DE as gnome and currently have that installed, but I am still adding packages to get it how I want it. I still need to figure out how to get x to start automatically with gdm at bootup. I know i'll figure it out soon with some more reading. The speed of this distro is very very impressive and I like the fact that it is a rolling release on the cutting edge because my pc has newer hardware which can make use of the optimizations.
My PC Specifications:
Intel Core i5 750
MSI GD-65 Motherboard
Corsair 4GB DDR3-1600 RAM
Crucial M225 128GB SSD
Creative X-Fi Fatality
and currently running on a 7800gt since starcraft 2 fried my 8800 Ultra but thats another story.
This is the first distro that has utilized the actual speed of my system and is actually even faster than Win 7! I find that to be amazing just because of the Win 7 optimizations for ssd's everything loads instantly and this feels even faster or just as fast. I have found my home on Linux after much distro hopping. From here the learning begins and we will evolve together.

edit /etc/inittab to uncomment the gdm line
x:5:respawn:/usr/sbin/gdm -nodaemon
and add a '5' to the kernel command line in /boot/grub/menu.lst
Beyond that, take a look through the forums and if you need more help, go ahaead and ask in a new thread.

Hey everyone,
I'm Tom and I've been using Linux for about 3 years now. Since I started I've tried Ubuntu at work, Fedora, Zenwalk and Arch at home and now it seems my preference has shifted from Fedora to Arch.
I've been running a private multi-purpose server with Arch x86_64 and the way it and the community work (especially the AUR) make me really want to be a part of this distro. I hope to be able to contribute something at some point in time, since I am a software developer, but I haven't found anything I could do on any distro so far.

Hi everyone,
My name is Piotr, I'm from Poland, and today is my second day with Arch, wich is my first Linux distro
I was using Windows for over 10 years, and about month ago I've decided to move on someting better.
I've started reading about Linux - tons of wikis, tutorials and manuals.
Yesterday I felt informed and brave enought to install Arch and now it seems like I've got new, working OS
The biggest advantage of linux over windows is IMO community.
Cheers!

Hello peoples.
I guess I'm not really new to Arch, but I'm using it again after quite a long hiatus; I have Win7 on my PC (I use it for gaming) and my old Linux laptop broke. But now I have a new laptop so it's back to dual booting XP/Arch.
My basic system is Openbox with Sakura, Tint2, Feh, Thunar and Conky. I try to keep other software light(ish) too, but still use Firefox because the addons are too useful to lose.
So yeah. I guess I'm not really new to the forum either since I've made threads in the past about newb issues. They probably won't be the last (sorry), but I thought I'd take this reinstall of Arch as a chance to say hi to the community I rely on to fix my stupid mistakes. Hi community!

hello all.
Been using Arch for about 2 weeks now having switched from Linux Mint. I'm fairly new to Linux having just started using it at the turn of the year but I enjoy tinkering so have picked up a few things in that time.
Very pleased with Arch and can see myself sticking with it long term.

I've been a dedicated GNU/Linux user since mid-2005, distro-hopping every few years in search of something new, exciting and hopefully challenging. I decided to have a go at Arch in July, when my laptop started slowing down on account of disk fragmentation from too much torrenting and Ubuntu Lucid's higher RAM demands. I really dig the rolling release model and incredible package manger, especially the PKGBUILD system!

Hi there! Name' Paul.
I was using different Linux distros for past few years (Ubuntu, Fedora, Debian), but at some point I've realized that two things about them are not fun: in Ubuntu system is trying to say "Hey! I know better, let's do it MY way!". Fedora and Debian aren't that bad, but one have to upgrade the whole system from time to time to get access to recent packages.
Rolling release FTW!

Hello all,
Been using Linux for quite some time now, my first distribution was Suse (back in the 9.x era) and I've been distro hopping around ever since. Had some issues getting things working under other distributions and usually disliked the upgrade systems (either speed, complexity, or, in one case, not being able to do anything while it is upgrading). I was trying arch out and liked it, despite still having some issues, when I stumbled onto the netbook-kernel project. I love the comminuty contributions and seeing all the projects people do. The documentation available in the arch wiki is positively superb too.

Hello everyone. I'm a relatively new Linux-user, I've been using Ubuntu and Fedora since 2009, but Arch seems to be the best distro for me.
I've been reading the installation guides and I'll be installing Arch soon!

Heya. I've been using Linux for a few years now after getting introduced to UNIX on Mac OS X, and it's my primary and preferred OS now. I started using Arch Linux on my eeePC after trying out various kinds of Linuxen, and I got bold enough to try something more gritty and detailed than something derived from Ubuntu. I like what I see so far, and I may start using Arch on my primary desktop if I can keep it up on my laptop.
Cheers to a good time, all!

Greetings from sunny southern California. I'm fairly new to linux. I switched from wondows 7 to Linux mint a few weeks ago because I couldn't get 7 to run very well, my laptop is pretty much just a 17 inch netbook, and couldn't run a web browser with 3 tabs, and a media player on top. My brother has always sung the praises of Arch, and I figured I'd give it a try, and I just finished the install, and already, I like it a lot more.
