Hello!!
I am pretty new to linux, started with Ubuntu about 6 months ago (after an argument with M$, they wanted my money and so did I). Loved it. Then I upgraded to 10.10. Hated it. Not that I hated Ubuntu but the upgrade. Then about a month ago I came over to Arch and have decided to stay here. Arch has really become what I want in my desktop and I have everything set up just the way I want it. I suppose that this is the advantage to Arch. That and rolling release.
The install, while a little intimidating and time consuming (the first time) was really a breeze. I have since had to do a reinstall but that went much faster and I barely even needed the guide. It really was not as scary as I had originally thought and I should have done it sooner.
Thank you all for the great guides and the great wiki. I do have one problem (I think it is in hardware) but today will be the first time I have actually needed to ask a question because of all of the work you all have put in here.

I fell into usage with Linux in undergrad with basic CS courses. I really liked all the wonderful things you could do just within the bash shell alone. Then I started doing some coding for Bioinformatics research. At the time I didn't want the headache of setting everything up myself so I went with Ubuntu. I absolutely loved Jaunty. It was just a very stable and pretty system. Then I upgraded to the new distro and absolutely hated it. I didn't like that I was forced to drop my sweet looking GDM for no GDM at all amongst other things. I also realized that I couldn't keep the current repos forever and keep the system rolling and I realized Ubuntu was kind of like Windows where you were forced to new distros without any concrete reason. After which I decided switch to Arch. Partially because I wanted to expand my understanding of system components and be able to control the elements I wanted to.
Let me say, that Arch so far has been quite the experience. I've already messed up quite a few times, but seems like breaking the system a couple of times has just vaulted me into a new strata of understanding. I hope to contribute to the community and hopefully learn as much as I can.

Hello everyone!
I have been using Linux for almost 4 years now.Started with Ubuntu (as everyone does) and distrohopped quite a lot(Fedora,Suse,PCLOS and the like).Using linux continuously is a learning curve ,and gradually i drifted continuously towards minimalism and cutting the fat.My last distro was Xubuntu.
Been on Arch for over a month now and quite satisfied.I really appreciate the philosophy of bottom-up and the fact that adding anything that you want is your own decision. No automatic services, bloated software and daemons!Excellent documentation too. I guess I wont be distro-hopping anymore, unless someday I take the plunge for LFS !
Really appreciate the way Arch has done things. My system feels a lot more "mine" now.
Also, after using Openbox I have come to really realise what people meant by saying that GNU/linux is infinitely tweakable.I do think that if i can do away with some time-borne windows habits, I can be much, much more productive.
Thanks all!

I was skeptical at first, but once I got Arch onto my Macbook and saw how well designed everything (especially pacman), I was sold. I haven't used Linux as a main system in almost 5 years. I've tried though - Gentoo, Ubuntu, Deb, Slax, LFS... They all failed me. But I'm coming back thanks to Arch. You rock my world!

Hello everyone! I'm Admiralspark, AKA Kris. I'm a freshie in college, attending the University of Alaska Fairbanks as a CS student.
Before switching to Linux, I was an over-the-top Windows poweruser. However, I began using linux distro's a couple years ago when my old windows XP install on my Compaq died, starting with Ubuntu 9.04. Loved 9.04, and I used knoppix to save everything off the windows install. Then Ubuntu upgraded, and I started hearing about bugs (but didn't experience any myself). I tried Opensuse and decided it was a whole lot of crap, went back to Ubuntu and then got sick of the bloat at 10.04. Switched to Linux Mint, and currently use Mint on my productivity Lenovo, though I have to dual-boot with W7 still for the few games I play...thank you ATi for not doing your best to support high-load games on my 5730!
I currently am compiling a couple new kernels daily (trying to build one for compiling the fastest with my i7, so that I can build my distro releases quickly). I write documentation for a few projects, do a ton of bash scripting trying to keep my old P3 linux server in order, I'm teaching myself python, I compile packages for puppy linux users and for debian users, and I also help test the local network and individual pc's with Backtrack (mostly penetration testing for now). I love debian testing and hate stable (my grandmother is more caught up with the times than Sarge!). Opensuse and SLED are too bloated for my tastes, Fedora wasn't user friendly enough for the size, RHEL/CentOS doesn't like me My Gentoo install worked, but I don't use it enough to justify the time I spend compiling/recompiling everything.
I work in troubleshooting Windows/Mac/Linux issues locally (more M$ than anything else) and have converted a few to the linux side who were fed up with paying for their OS like me.
Arch, of course, is the distro that's listed most often in comparisons with Gentoo, and so I figured I'd give it a spin. It's perfect for me--I love building netinstalls on debian, but I got bored with stability...you don't learn to fix it if it won't break!
Archer +1
EDIT: I'm also one of those people who quips "should've used linux" when my roommate has a windows issue...and he's now using it too. Pavlovian training anyone?

Hello all!
I've been using Arch for a few years now but never registered. But, it's finally time! I spent the last four days trying to get the PowerPC port of Arch to run on an old PowerBook G4 and finally succeeded tonight. Now I'll have a proper subversion repository and file server!

Hello all
I just registered to forum and I'm going to try Arch Linux now

Installed Arch Linux a few weeks ago. I have used a lot of operating systems but this one feels extremely light just like AntiX Mepis.

Well Hey everyone!
I, like Auzern, came into contact with Arch just a few weeks ago. I'm relatively new to Linux, although I've played around with various distros of Linux and BSD in the past before turning back to WindozeXP for a long time due to time/logistics/energy constraints (study/work/girlfriend/etc). If I would have encountered a rugged and no-nonsense distro like arch back then, I would have been a much happier camper all along.. But hey, now it's on my harddrive, it's not coming off!
Thanks Arch team!

Hello
Linux noob here, got my feet wet with Kubuntu I installed onto a netbook for a work project that had me going out of state for two weeks. Got myself up and running by consistantly breaking it and having to fix various issues. Thank god for google.
Then put Ubuntu on my desktop and same process. Broke stuff. Fixed it with help from the Web.
Got Arch put on instead yesterday after I created a backup script that flooded my HDD with backup files. My friend suggested that Arch would force me to learn more about Linux and help me possibly get a job supporting Linux in the future (my goal).
Thanks to the Wiki and of course other web sources I was able to get myself running comfortably now.
I hope to be somewhat active on the forums so that I can claim it as experience and possibly get my foot in the door somewhere lol.

Hey guys, new to Arch Linux here. Came from Ubuntu/Mint, was sick of the extra software packages and wanted to have complete control over what was installed to my system (running on light resources). Arch hit the mark and I'm a very happy camper

Hello World!!
Coming back to Linux after a few years in wilderness. I was using Gentoo back in college days and then went back to Windows. Now after about 4 years I am coming back to Linux. Gentoo was good but now I am over the whole compile everything days. Gentoo and Arch are very much similar besides the loads of compiling.
Looking forward to being with Arch.

I recently switched to Arch from Kubuntu. I started dabbling with linux LiveCD's several years ago, installed Ubuntu a couple years ago decided I liked KDE more than GNOME and switched to Kubuntu, and stuck with that until a few weeks ago. I had heard about ArchLinux a bit, so I started to look into it, and I liked everything I saw. So when I had a little extra time I installed and configured Arch on my laptop. So far, it's working pretty well. I really like the Arch Way, and the rolling release isn't bad either. But for me at least the real selling point was pacman, combined with makepkg, AUR, and ABS.
I look forward to a positive experience.

Hi everybody! Friendly GNU/Linux noob here. I switched over to Mint 8 about a year ago and since then I've been hooked on Linux. I've used Mint, Ubuntu, Debian, SliTaz, #!, and about six months ago I began using Arch. It's a great distribution for those looking for a quick, slick, snappy OS.

Hello!
I switched to Arch few days ago. I've tried quite a few distros and I must admit, Arch is great. I was using Ubuntu for the past few years but got tired of it. At last I feel like I really control my system. And the best thing is that everything works in Arch. Little things like audio over hdmi are making me very happy.
Best regards to everyone!

Hello members of the Arch forums!
I started my linux life with Ubuntu a few months ago, but started distro-hopping between others like OpenSUSE, Fedora, Debian, Linux Mint and now Arch Linux, and I finally reached the end of my distro-hopping with Arch Linux.
Great job Arch Team!

Hi all. I'm looking for a simpler and lighter base system for servers, virtual servers, and appliances. I appreciate the Arch philosophy of minimalism, but love the fact that it's not completely DIY.

Hello folks,

I love archLinux for its hacker feel and the fact that it makes you learn about hox the system functions if you want things to just werk, while at the same time offering some really rewarding features.
Hope this forum is as nice as the french one http://forums.archlinux.fr/
