Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hi, everyone. My name is Gene, and I've been using Linux since late 2006. I started with *buntu (like everyone, it seems), and almost went back to Windoze because *buntu was such a broken POS. Fortunately I was persuaded to try Debian, and ran Debian stable for the next three years. About this time last year I started using Debian testing/unstable because I was sick of running trailing-edge software (and had recently picked up some new hardware that Debian Lenny didn't like). Last spring I switched to Slackware. I really dig the simplicity/configurability, and the stable Slackware release is at least as solid as Debian stable, without being so hopelessly outdated. I've been playing with Arch on a VM for about a month, and finally decided to do a hard install.

I'm not exactly switching to Arch. I'm going to continue running Slackware stable on my wife's laptop (computer system breakages really piss her off), the laptop I use for my various business ventures (which really only gets used if I'm mobile), and my servers. I've installed Arch on my main desktop machine at home in the hopes that I can enjoy the latest software, but with fewer headaches than I get running the Slackware or Debian development trees. I have a Slackware-oriented Linux website full of beginner-level tutorials:

http://genek.net/LinuxAdventures/index.html

and a Linux blog that goes with it:

http://genek.net/wordpress/

I've also recently begun contributing to the Slackware community with some software packages. If Arch works out for me the way I hope it will, I'll make some similar contributions here, or perhaps lend my not inconsiderable writing/teaching skills to the already excellent Arch Wiki (really, that's one marvelous piece of documentation; those who work on it are to be congratulated).

Here's hoping to get to know everyone here a little better, and to make myself a part of this terrific little community... so long as no one minds that I also use Slackware for some things!

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

I've got Arch running on my main desktop machine in place of Slackware. So far it's great; I've got very updatey stable software running from the core, extra, and community repos just as slick as you please, and KDE 4.6 RC2 from the kde-unstable repo. A few odds and ends from AUR and I have everything I need installed (and I do some fairly diverse and specialized stuff). It's running fast and stable. I have a few config issues to attend to (gotta get jack running with realtime privileges and talking to Ardour) but I anticipate no trouble. I'll probably keep Slackware running on the machines where absolute stability is a must, but so far I'm having a lot of fun using Arch on my main desktop box. I think I'm going to end up leaving it there! Happy to be here.

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hi all!
I'm Davide, from Trento (a little town in northen Italy), and I'm currently studying Computer Science at my town's University.

After having used Windows during my school years (also for programming), I started appreciating Ubuntu's applications and the command line... Then I started exploring Linux and felt quite unconfortabe with ubuntu's guides. So when I bought a new laptop I migreted to Arch thanks to a friend's tip (he actually runs Gentoo, but I'm not THAT ill) and immidiately loved it and it's wiki. And that was when I raised from Ubuntu's quite-advanced user to Arch's noob, and I couldn't be happier.

So thanks to all the developers and the community!
Davide

Hello Linux users, is an honor to join this wonderful forum.
I am a linux user for 8 years. Jumping from debian fedora and gentoo. And now ... ARCH!

Arch Linux has captivated me and not the distribution itself, by the community. One of the best I've seen in the Linux world. Long live free information! Long live Arch Linux!

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hey all! Long time Linux/OSS fan here smile

Started with Red Hat 6 on a Pentium (it was an old machine at the time), never had a serious use for it. Drifted back to windoze for a while. Started getting back into Linux about a year ago. Tried Xubuntu, wasn't terribly impressed. Was looking into LFS when I came across Arch.

Found exactly what I wanted: a lightweight base with lots of configurability. Arch give you a system that exemplifies what, to me, Linux is about: It's your system, do things your way.

Been using Arch for about 6 months now, loving every minute of it. K.I.S.S.!

Hi everybody,

my name is Markus and i joined the Arch community a few days ago. I've been using Arch linux for more than a year now. I love the distribution because of its simplicity and flexibility.

Arch is an amazing project and I've decided to give something back to the community by maintaining some packages in the AUR. More to come smile

Hello everyone!

I've been a long time windows user for a long time,  but I've gradually gained interest over linux.. I've started with installing unix-likes distros with VirtualBox and then Installed Ubuntu. Not long after that I've installed arch. I've heard good things about arch and yeah it's good OS. The community here have been very helpful. I'm just wondering why I didn't switch earlier. Archlinux FTW.

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Greetings.

Long time distro hopper here. Think I`ve tried just about every one of the top 10 distros on Distrowatch apart from Arch, well, up till earlier today.

I have FINALLY managed to get Arch up and running with KDE.

just updating & installing things through pacman at the moment.

Hello Everyone. I'm running Arch on an outdated Dell computer, and it works well. My previous distro of choice was Ubuntu Lucid.

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

I just installed Arch, X and Gnome and even enabled wireless w/WPA in about the time it would take for me to manually configure my kernel in Gentoo! So far, I'm impressed with the simplicity of the installation, and the exceptional documentation/wiki. I've installed this on an old Dell notebook, and it's running extremely well. I'm going to have to work on the fonts a little, but....nice job Archers!!

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

I would really like to tell you the epic story of how I overcame Beasts and Bugs, faced grim foes and looked directly into the mind-consuming, ugly and unpatched source code. Long tales of my ardous travels to shiny Ubuntu, blind Suse and even the endless tour through the far Gentoo...

But, hey. Damn.

No time to say hello, goodbye, I'm late! I'm late! I'm late!

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Evenin' (or morning or afternoon?)

I've been running on Ubuntu for a while and ran into some annoyances trying to remove GNOME so I finally decided to try Arch - no more OCDing over what to get rid of. The install was surprisingly easy but it'll still take some time to transition from apt-get and .deb to Pacman and AUR, but I'm sure understanding will come with time (and a lot of reading).

Hope to see everyone around! big_smile

i managed setting up arch with lxde and some minor customization, having installed most of the applications i need.
i already love the system as it's so snappy and clean!

but there's a whole bunch of issued i need to solve, and that's why i'm here! i hope you can get me some help i couldn't find myself reading older threads.
first off, this morning a found an unpleasant surprise after the yesterday late night upgrade. please have a look at this thread started by jack450

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hey @all
I installed Arch for the first time a few days ago. On my mainbox I use Gentoo, but i didn't want my netbook do die on overwork. I used Ubuntu on that portable device before and am delighted to notice, that the arch configuration-style suits my taste much better. Like a crossbreed of debian and gentoo wink.
However I didn't do linux-configuration for a while and so there probably will be questions to discuss with you. I hope I can help too when I'm a bit more into it again.
I hope my english is sufficient, I am actually a german guy.
So I hope we will have a good time and "a lot of fun!".

bye

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hello everyone,

I'm Steve from Houston, Tx, where I am a member of the local LUG and a Linux fanatic. I've been using Linux, on and off for many years. A long time ago, I recall starting with SuSE, trying a million others, but lately using Debian before trying Arch. I threw in Freebsd, Desktop BSD and PC-BSD in there for good measure.

I am looking forward to the great community and resources here at Arch, and learning about Arch Linux and the culture/mindset ala "Arch Way" that goes along with it.

So far, I have been really impressed with what I have seen with Arch. I guess if I were to pick the most impressive thing so far, it would be the config options exposed to the user during install, followed closely by the Beginner's Guide. Kudos to the writer(s) who seem to have succeeded in providing the right amount of detail to guide the installer.

I installed Arch on a homebuilt Asus AMD box which is working great!
mb-->m4a785td-m evo
cpu-->amd athlon II x3 445
ram-->4gb
hd-->sata 1TB

I installed it to a MSDOS partitioned non-LVM disk. I want to explore the possibility to install to a GPT LVM managed disk, though.

got the base install done without much issue
got xfce4 installed without much issue (and using it to write this!). I've only had it running for an hour and it has been very responsive. Firefox installed in a few seconds. (and nice to have a fast net connection!)
gnome gave me problems launching gnome-terminal(?) so I blew gnome off, earlier.

I notice bootup is kinda slow. It hangs on the cd for maybe 10 secs, then hangs on the udev scan (maybe 15 secs).
I guess compiling a custom kernel will help.

Anyway, good to be here and looking forward to learning more about Arch.

Here's the obligatory ARCH ROCKS!!!

You all take it easy
Steve.

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hy everyone, I just recently decided I'll switch on linux, so I was searching the web for about a week to decide which distribution is the best. After long search I decided for arch, even though it's not for a beginners they say XD (I like to push my self hard). When I read about it, I really liked the idea of "simple" os (though I reinstalled arch around 34-35 times when finally succeding in setting it up right), and also repositories (official/user) are a real discovery for me who used windows all my life. I mean... installing a software by just saying "I want this, this and this. Install it for me" XD.

Allso I must say, wiki is really awesome and with chromium press tab to search option, it's waaaaay better than f1 help function in windows (I actually find something usefool and understandable by human beings, and not just some generic super technicall words that only people with masterdegree in computer science understand).

I know that this isn't a thread to ask this, but I have couple of unrelated things to solve on my archlinux installation, so if someone can just point me in the right direction where to search. I tried google, and wiki (I actually folowed guides best I could) but no results.

1. I've been fiddling around with propriety drivers for ati video card, but I get even worse 3d support than I allready had with open source drivers (tested it on warsow, really cool game I must say)
2. I'm using wicd network manager, I also tried others like gnome or something manager (actually I tried every single one of them listed on openbox wiki), but wicd worked and looked best smile, only problem is that he's somewhat laggy when connecting to wireless. He freezes the whole screen when closing connection, or connecting to another network. I read somewhere that it's because of aurora gtk engine, I think, but I found theme that uses murrine (don't know If I wrote those two correctly, I'm just writing out of my head). Anyway, I don't use any login manager, but I start my openbox session from console (meaning before any theme engine can even be loaded), and I have wicd in daemons. When I start computer i get to type in username in console, but when wicd is in daemons, even the console freezes for about 10 sec or so. So if there's solution to that. Thanx XD.
3. Web camera on skype doesn't work (I'm talking about my integrated web camera). I have tried to google for my laptop to see if in it specs is listed what web camera is integrated, but it only says "you have a darn good web camera pal". I find command lspci, but I didn't see anything that would be webcamera there. Anyway, I see video, when using guvcview. I tried running skype as described in wiki, but no success.

I know that this isn't theme for this, but I'm lazy to open 3 different posts. (Admins please be gentle, I'm just asking for a little direction XD )

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hi!
Greetings from mid Norway!
I'm noob on Arch. Actually I've not tried to install it yet, but hope to change that very soon.

My first "hand on" with GNU/Linux dates back to 1998 when i ran into it on an University. I then tried to install Redhat 6.0 on my computer, but to no vain. Spent 6 weeks and no running computer. I then had a break from it, but watching it all the way, and tried again some years later with SuSE 8.0. That was painless. After that I've used GNU/Linux in my daily use of computers. Shortly after I got my SuSE up and running i ran into Debian, and im still using it. On desktop i started to use Ubuntu some years back, out of shere lazieness.
My currently projects is Ubuntu on desktop, Debian on various servers(backup, web, CRM) and Skolelinux, privat school I'm administrating. Previous projects includes Slackware, Gentoo(Snort IDS/IPS system from the scratch and up), Mint, Redhat, Fedore Core, Clarkconnect, OpenBSD(pfSense), and more that I don't remeber atm.
My main reason to try out Arch is that i found the Philosophy for this distro very apealing. I've also always wanted to learn GNU/Linux from scratch, and this seems the perfect distro to try it out with. After I discovered this distro I've read mutch nice bout the comunity too, and I hope to partisipate in the comunity as mutch as I want to, but lets see how that goes.
Good Luck to you all, and have fun with it!

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hello everyone!

I have been using Arch a couple of months now and I have been very happy with it. If few virtualbox tests do not count I had pretty much no previous linux experience so getting started took a while. big_smile (Especially getting dualboot and sowftware raid 1 with lvm for my laptop caused some headaches). On top of that Arch certainly wasn't what people recommended for a first linux experience, but I wanted to learn and pretty much thanks to the great wiki pages I am still here.

After the start everything has been running pretty much flawlesly and I have grown fond of Awesome WM and the idea behind tiling windowmanagers. Also the rolling release system has been one of the greatest experiences so far. I hope others posting here will have an equally good experience with Arch Linux as I have had and I am sure I am not going to go anywhere any time soon.
