Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hello Arch Community!

I would play with Fedora for a while and then began to mess around on the terminal and discovering its power.  Later on I found out about Arch.  I started my first attempt in using it for a week and then left it for 6 months until I decided to return to take a try again.  Currently I've been using this distribution for a month already and it's been so great to use.  Not to mention it's really educational about linux and the variety of commands that exist out there.  The wiki is amazing, it's so full and extensive, not to mention that I haven't had to ask for any advice because it's all there.

Glad to be here, I hope to learn more about this great distribution.

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hi folks! It's been a while since I was last here. I was running Windows for a while due to driver issues, but now the kernel has caught up I'm back where I belong - running Linux!

I've experimented quite a bit with different set ups and here's some things I've learned so far.

1. Avoid the new GNOME interface like the plague ... it's too awful for words. Can't reconfigure the look and feel without special tools? WTH were they thinking?
2. After a bit of experimentation with Xfce4, I can make all my applications have the same look & feel by choosing the right engines (something I've always had problems with).
3. I'm liking jfs quite a bit. Seems more efficient than ext4.

Things I've still to do:
1. Get access to AUR sorted out.
2. Sort the Xfce4 menu (I'll have to look up the Wiki for that one).

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Greetings! I'm new to Linux, and picked up Arch as my first distro. I know it may not be the best choice, but my goal is to learn linux and it's command line, not how to use a GUI based desktop environment.

Secretly ..... I hope to eventually pick up a Linux+ cert from CompTIA! ... muahahaa!

Hi Arch people !

I'm just another Noob-arch-addict, and I spent so much time on that forum for setting-up my conf that I finally decided to create my account !
My name is Willy, (z3bra online), Informatic french student (so sorry for some english mistakes), and I discovered Arch 1 month few weeks ago (definitivly addicted !).

Actually I run openbox with rxvt-unicode (with GNU/screen), conky and tint2 and I'm always searching for new tips to improve my desktop (and also my linux skills ^^)

I think that's all for the moment, and i'm always open to talk about all and nothing wuth everybody !

Arch user RGoose from north-central Indiana.

I've been a long time lurker on these forums, I've been using Arch for about 2.5 years and Linux for 4, I finally feel that I have run into and troubleshot enough problems that I might be able to help some people out.

I use Xfce exclusively since Gnome3 killed my workflow.

I think rolling release is one of the best things about arch, I got really tired of ubuntu blowing its brains out every 6 mo. haha

Goodbye all. Arch has not worked out for me and it is simply too much time and effort to get things to work.

I'm heading back to Lubuntu.

Hi everybody!

I was just searching for a good and customizable distro for a netbook, so I decided to give Arch a try. I hope I can help some people here and also be helped. I came from Gentoo, which is my current desktop distribution. See you!

Hi all,

Installed arch a few days ago. I have been using Linux Mint mostly and Windows. But after Windows decided to destroy itself I chose to install Arch as I wanted a bit more control. Everything seems to be going fine at the moment.

Didn't I say hi? smile

I'm a semi-experienced Linux user since 2000. Started with good old Slackware, used almost all mainstream distros and after an enlightening Gentoo experience, now I'm an Archer. I love simplicity coupled with decent package management. And of course, being on the bleeding edge is fun when you can find your way.

Thanks for the good work!

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hello! I installed arch linux last week on my spring break on two laptops (sony vaio vpcw111xx and an asus eee 1015 seashell series [or something like that]). I use xfce4 on each one and I am considering installing multiple desktops over time on my vaio just to try it out. I used ubuntu for 4-5 years, and eventually I switched to fedora 13. At this point I found it more amusing to switch between ubuntu and fedora on each major release until I had fedora 15 with gnome-shell/gnome 3 on it. It was such a hassle that I got sick of it, and I switched over to Linux Mint because I wanted gnome 2 back (and ubuntu just didn't have it anymore because of unity.)

After using mint 11 for almost a year, I installed mint 12 with cinnamon and MATE, which, in my opinion, are two great gnome-3 desktop replacements. However each one still has its bugs and I just didn't want to deal with the sillyness & the slowness, so I finally decided that it was time to get in control of my system and to become someone that really knows what's going on with his system. I installed arch linux and since then I have been super happy (and super distracted from schoolwork because I love messing around/fixing things in arch so much!)

So thanks to everyone for providing such great wikis/forums/package repos/everything! See you all around!

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hello,

my name is Lewis. I'm a 17 years old boy from the Netherlands, currently doing a study to become an application developer. I'm not planning to stop studying anytime soon, and will keep learning untill I've reached the top.

The first time I learned about Linux was late 2006/early 2007. I found out about a linux distro named Mint, which was then still relatively unknown. Since I've always been interested in the "math behind the magic" , and Windows didn't really give you much access to the engine, I directly went on to install Linux. the first experiences were pretty magical, but also kinda harsh. A lot of driver problems, hard to use software and, worst of all, no Windows applications. Because I like to game a bit, and because during Middle school (Dutch middle school is at least from years 12-16) I did not feel much for non-lazy hobbies I left Linux for what it was.

But 1,5 ago I finished middle school and started with a study in the Informatica (yay!). My mood has significantly improved since then and I feel much more motivated, and my grades do confirm I'm in the right place. A little as 2 months ago I finished the first study, which was a more like an all-round computer technician course. It was a prerequisite for what I really wanted to do: Programming. Now I'm attending a course to become an application developer, like said ealier. I've got a lot more of spare time, so I think it's time to start with Linux again. But that's not the only reason. There's one thing I absolutely hate when programming: relying on a single OS because you haven't got the experience to develop for others. Especially if that OS is not promoting freedom at all, but actually quite the opposite. *uche* Windows *uche*.

So, I'm still relatively new to Linux, but I'm hoping to learn a lot. Something archlinux is great for, because of it's "barebone-ness".

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hello. I am Robert Lee IV. I am 19 years old and from the USA. I am new to Arch and have been using Linux for little over a year. I decided to go with Arch for lack of an E17 distribution I like, that works. Bodhi doesn't like my wireless card, Sabayon phased out modules I feel necessary for usage (ex engage) and the other distributions I tried just didn't work. The biggest reason I chose to go with Arch though was my positive encounters with Chakra, which happens to be my favorite distribution. Sadly my laptop finds KDE too heavy. Also ya'll seem to have a lot of blue.
Now I am not going to lie, I have heard some bad things about the people here but I figure I might as well give ya'll a chance, and hopefully we can be friends. I can be a major newbie and I will often ask stupid questions, forget to do my homework, or leave information out when asking for help (you have been warned). Also I think I made the moderators on the IRC mad because now I can not speak there, and for that I apologize. So nice to meet ya'll.

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hello folks,

I recently installed Arch, and am very impressed with the philosophy, documentation, x86 platform dedication, and rolling release concept.  I have been a loyal Debian user for many years, even before Ubuntu was born.  Before Debian I was a Winders user until I saw things differently and abandon it back at version Win98.  Although, I am still forced to continue using it at the work place.  Aren't we all.

I stumbled on Arch when recently migrating to my new platform (at home, AMD A8-3870 processor).  My old platform was a Athlon XP 1800 for many years.  I never could have spent that amount of time on the old platform without linux.  With Debian, I was still able to have things my way, and was quite an apt-get command line fan.

I actually started my new platform build with Debian, then ran into a problem that got timely....largely because of documentation.  Anyway, while trying to resolve my problem through googling, I stumbled on Arch's documentation wiki and became infatuated and read more.  I read the Arch Linux and Arch Way articles and felt this was a match made in heaven for me.    I then read reviews and ratings and saw Arch was up at the top.  So, I abandoned my Debian build mid-stream and installed Arch.   The install was practically flawless and quick, and I am just about back up to speed.  So pacman is now my Apt-get.  Don't get me wrong, I have a lot of respect for what Debian has accomplished and for  sticking to their open source philosophy no matter what.  They are the cornerstone for many distributions.

Hope to learn more and help out where-ever.  Thanks for having me.

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hi All, thought I'd just introduce myself. My name's Karl, a high school computing teacher by trade,  and I'm considering hopping to Crunchbang. I'm no strnager to linux; I've been using it since 1998. I've been through many different distros, and I've switched as my needs have changed. Recently however, I've been very restless.

I was fairly settled with Ubuntu a few years ago - it was reasonably stable, had a lot of support. But recently it's been taking a worrying stance when it comes to limiting user choice. I like to be able to tinker with things, I don't expect to be told what I can and can't do with my own OS. Goes against everything FOSS is about in my opinion. So when the Ubuntu devs started putting unnecessary limitations on various programs in order to "make it more user friendly", I naturally go annoyed and left.

I went across to Debian. I ran squeeze for a while, but then took the plunge and upgraded to Sid. I was sort of anxious to try out Gnome 3 of all things. While I did rather enjoy the gnome shell, I eventually hit some brick walls when it came to support for certain packages. A friend of mine rcommended Mint, so I switched again.

I've been running Mint for a few months now, but the Ubuntu trappings are really starting to show, and so I'm thinking of moving on again. I've been playing around with Openbox on my current install for a while and I really like the minimalist approach. The problem I have at the moment is that my install feels weighted down with the ghost of gnome. I need to trim the fat.

so currently I'm looking at two options: Crunchbang and Arch. I downloaded a liveimage of Crunchbang to give it a whirl, and rather liked it, but the idea of taking a minimal Arch install and shaping it to me needs is very appealing. My goals are:

  • To set up a minimalist system which does what I want and no more

  • To start with a minimal set of applications and expand outwards as necessary

  • To make my system LOOK as elegant and efficient as it PERFORMS.

So if anyone has anything good to say about Arch (and I'm guessing most of you do), I'd love to hear from you. Is this the system I'm looking for based on what I've mentioned above?

Thanks guys.

Yup. You start out with packages in group base and you'd probably want group base-devel too. You can choose from the popular DEs, go with just a WM, or even not install X if you want. Everything is documented in our wiki. Be sure to read the Beginners' Guide. Good luck and have fun. smile

I almost went with CrunchBang once. It's quite nice. I found it a bit annoying that the default keymap is UK, otherwise I would have installed it. I've also enjoyed Debian Netinst in the past. I like its minimalism and stability.

If you're after a minimal system that offers a lot of opportunity for tinkering and customisation, I think you would have trouble going past Arch. So long as you keep it light and follow a few best practices such as keeping your packages religiously up to date and familiarising yourself with the wiki, you will not look back.

Welcome to the forums smile.

Thanks for the welcome guys. I've spent most of this evening reading through the wiki, both the beginner's guide and the installation guide (as well as various other sections). Nice well written documentation. Looks like this weekend is going to be spent tinkering wink

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hi.  I've been using arch for about a year now, and the time has come to share my feelings about Arch.  In short, I love it, and as long as it exists and stays pretty much the same (Ub-ahem-untu ahem Unit-ahem-y), Arch will always be my numero uno distro.  I'm done with distro hopping.  I think I've tried just about every linux distro in existence (of course I'm lying, but I've seriously probably tried more than 30).  My skill level is somewhere between "what the hell is linux?" and "THIS isn't Windows!".  But my personal feelings about how an OS should work are in perfect agreement with "The Arch Way".  Despite my continued noobness, I find the Arch Wiki almost painfully clear and well documented so that even though I don't always know what I'm doing, I can work things out on my own most of the time.  The forums are excellent for the rest of the time  (HUGE thanks to karol, who always seems to be there to help me out of a bind).  I'm finally starting to begin to feel that I'm commencing to understand my OS...a little bit.

Thank you to all the developers and the community.
