Re: FaunOS: New USB Key Distro Based on Arch

The Faun is Back!

I have uploaded the new images/isos to the http://www.faunos.com. This one works!

Here is a direct link to the image download:
http://www.faunos.com/download.php?f=faunos01e.img
MD5 Checksum:8992bbcc4995732385db5971fbd4804f

What I changed:
The boot error had to do with isolinux so I changed faunos to use grub. Much more consistency and flexibility with grub.

To test, I bought a cheap new USB flash key drive off the shelf from a local store and followed my own instructions to make the USB and it worked.

Thanks,
Raymano

Raymano;

Can the change be applied to the present download with a replacement to affected area?

Pleased to know you have provided an improved boot!

Unfortunately no. For grub, I changed the root fs to ext2 (much faster and allows much larger os files in the future). So the new image file is completeley different.

I know downloads are a pain. It took me 12 hours to upload the new files to the web site since my upload speeds from home are limited. Please bare with it this time. wink

Re: FaunOS: New USB Key Distro Based on Arch

the d.img with grub worked for me
got it to boot & connect wirelessly
tried posting here but battery dieing, thanks to monitor i was able to power off before it died

few things
its fast .... i like it!

network remove your stuff if your gonna have this to be used by others
essid NetGear   id go with "any" as to let it connect with any available connection
i810 id go with vesa or let user configure X themselves
i didnt hear any sounds didnt play around much though i did notice alsa daemon failed though
ill play with it more at a later date & post my findings

i hope you dont take my suggestions as being to critical i just think it should either be more generic in setup or let user set it up maybe you can get with z4ziggy put in a script for detedting/configuring hardware in each machine then saving work on exit. he has some great work hes doing with archie

i realize alot of work went into this & thank you for sharing

awesome job on faunos looking forward to seeing it evolve a bit more

Re: FaunOS: New USB Key Distro Based on Arch

Thanks for giving FaunOS a try and your great comments. This is definitely the first iteration and there will be changes.
I am looking forward to more feedback like yours to see what to do in the next release.

Have been unable to download the .img without errors in transmission...tried several browsers with same results.  Many hours have gone by with multiple failures.

Gonna keep trying...

Re: FaunOS: New USB Key Distro Based on Arch

Just got another failure....

The download stated it had completed the download...only 25.5MB was downloaded out of the 860MB for the faunos download of the file for flash drives.  Is there a problem with the ID of the file at Faunos.com?

I downloaded via seamonkey browser and it has failed every time, usually at 1.2MB or so.

It is correctly ID'ed as o1e.img in the download.

Can't fathom what is going wrong.......

Try downloading it directly:

http://www.faunos.com/downloads/faunos01e.img

I will update the links on the site as well.

My problem is that I have limited band width with my hosting service that could be causing download problems. Does anyone have some space/bandwidth to host these files for a while?

EDIT:

I think the problem is with SeaMonkey. I just installed SeaMonkey and tried the download with it and it craps out in the middle sad
wget and firefox work without a problem.

Re: FaunOS: New USB Key Distro Based on Arch

I have tried the following:

wget from the cli

Opera

Firefox

Seamonkey

Wget fails at 16684 repeatedly....

Seamonkey quits at 2mb

Opera quits at different spots....

When I first downloaded faunos with the 01d.img, it worked right off in seamonkey.  Now it fails almost at the beginning.

It isn't doing the same thing on each of the download methods.

What else is there?

Re: FaunOS: New USB Key Distro Based on Arch

Downloaded via seamonkey.....download complete occured at 414.2MB...

File is not identified as "partial".   Decided to install what I had into flash...

Took 1min 30 secs.

Boot sequence starts with faun bkgd and boot options.

Selection of either option produces error 13...invalid or unsupported executable format...didn't expect to get much more.

Memory test runs ok.

How can I build on the 414.2MB file?

Re: FaunOS: New USB Key Distro Based on Arch

You can't do anything with a partial download. I'm surprised memory test works!
What you can do is try to download the rest of it using wget --continue. Do this where you have downloaded the partial file:

wget --continue http://www.faunos.com/downloads/faunos01e.img

This should continue downloading the rest of the file. If it keeps craping out you can repeat.

Hope this helps.

Re: FaunOS: New USB Key Distro Based on Arch

wget --continue ....not recognized...

Tried ....curl... and got a disconnect after hundreds of MB downloaded.

Supposed to be able to continue in curl...it has a cli command of...

curl -C - -o file....URL

The curl I have in my system doesn't permit the ...-C---option to be entered...

Hopeless from here...

Cannot figure how I was able to download the original 01d.img and cannot do so with the 01e.img.

Re: FaunOS: New USB Key Distro Based on Arch

Finally got to " continue" in curl program and completed the download!!

It took 3min 23 sec to install in flash device.

Boot time from start of c2r was 30 secs...however incomplete.

The display hangs on ..."mode not supported...H:75.0khz.....V:60.0HZ"

My LCD display runs on the VGA output of the computer.

Is there a "cheat code" to modify the display params?

I received an audio confirmation of KDE without seeing KDE on the display.

I may have to try download again!

What size is the file faunos01e.img in your boot file.

Re: FaunOS: New USB Key Distro Based on Arch

I'm glad you're getting further smile

You have to make sure you have enough ram (at least 1.2 GB) to do c2r. I think your graphics driver problem has to do with the incomplete c2r as well. The complete c2r takes about 1 to 2 minutes on my machine. See if it works without c2r.

The size of faunos01e.img is 900608000 but more accurately you should check the md5 checksum which is 8992bbcc4995732385db5971fbd4804f.

If you can wait a couple of days I am planning on releasing a new FaunOS with some more customization and some more packages including inkscape and gparted and keeping it under 1G size on the USB key.

Thanks for your patience on this. I'm sure FaunOS will improve quickly with help of more people like you.

Re: FaunOS: New USB Key Distro Based on Arch

I have 2GB of ram so no prob with c2r.  It displays the same display problem in normal boot.
I have the same size reported in my file.

The params used in my arch boot are 48khz and 60Hz with 1024x768  size.

The display reports ....no acceptable mode...I assume it is not included in xorg and that is not covered in the boot sequence as a basic mode.

I also assume the data displayed H:=75khz and V:60Hz  are the modes provided by the faunos.

The download problem I had is the first instance of disconnect I have encountered in seven years of Linux!!

FaunOS does not have a xorg.conf by defualt. Xorg recognizes the card/display automatically.

I am not familiar with the parameters you are talking about? Are they kernel params? If they are kernel parms then the FaunOS filesystem on the USB key is ext2 and if you mount it rw you can edit boot/grub/menu.lst to your liking.

Re: FaunOS: New USB Key Distro Based on Arch

Very nice. I downloaded the dvd and tried it..and will continue to experiment.
Question: Can I add packages that I want such as: Scribus, gvim, cream, skype?

Question: Why am I having so much trouble with passwords. Can't set up printer - etc.
Please advise root password and guest password.

Thanks.

Yes you can. pacman is preconfigured on FaunOS. Just "sudo pacman -Sy whateverpackage".

BTW you can either use sudo (preset for user guest) from the guest account or login as root to do it.

Also the password for guest is guest and password for root is root.
