did you specify your specific monitor?

No. hwd -x didn't ask any questions, it generated an xorg.conf on its own.

Hi, I'm glad to see your getting things sorted out!. Yea the problems sometimes seem never ending, but sorting them out hopefully makes us a little bit smarter : )
I'm not sure I can help with your resolution problem since your configuration is a lot different than mine, but I did have similar troubles with a dell 2005 FPW. What helped me the most was googling my monitor along with keywords xorg.conf. Looking at example xorg.conf files that others had working was a huge help! Also my problem was complicated due to having three monitors to configure.
There are some working example xorg.conf files in the arch wiki at...
http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xor … conf_Files
What I finally did with mine was I deleted all the mode lines except for the one with the resolution I wanted, and then experimented with it until I found a mode line that worked. Of course I became very familiar with the nano editor every time X didn't start! I always kept a backup xorg.conf file that would at least start X, so every time I screwed up I could open it with nano and save as xorg.conf to get X back up.
update, I just remembered... I think X will start without a xorg.conf file and will just use generic settings. It could be helpfull if you really botch things up like I did a few times : )
What is your exact monitor model?

I don't see any way to configure the Display in Gnome. I know you can do it in Fedora that way but I don't see an entry for it anywhere in System -> Preferences or System -> Administration.
My monitor is the Dell 2407wfp. It's this one right here:

I'll keep tinkering with the settings to see if I can't get one that works.

Those are nice monitors!, we use them at work. Here's a few links about your monitor and resolution that might help you.

Heres a thread with people that seem to have had the same trouble as you and it looks like there was a solution found.....

Thanks for the links, Leigh. I'm going to be away from the computer for a couple of days but I'll give it another go when I get back.

Problem Solved. Just got back to my computer today and started tweaking xorg.conf a little bit. Changed the HorizSync and VertRefresh values from what I had to this:
HorizSync 30.0 - 83.0
VertRefresh 56.0 - 76.0
Restared X and 1920x1200 resolution was automatically assigned. I am very happy. Thanks to everybody for their help. I may be back here with more questions sooner than you think.
