I upgraded yesterday my i686 with radeon drivers, worked perfectly.... Changed to fglrx.... Works perfectly......
using xorg.conf...
I didn't quite get how things are supposed to work now....

To bypass the xrandr, I think you can just make a few modifications in /etc/X11/xorg.conf. I have an intel card, so can't test it with nVidia, but in case it works:
Wow - normally I don't reply to 2-year old threads, but THANKS!
My just recently upgraded system that was using the standard 2D "nv" driver was working perfectly with 1680x1050 on my 22" monitor without too much trouble, and suddenly stopped working and only provided me with 1600x1200 - xrandr didn't even know about 1680x1050 anymore.
Yes, using the proprietary nvidia driver worked just fine at 1680x1050, but I wanted the open nv driver back, and your gtf modeline tip worked great.
In fact, I didn't even have to add "preferredmode" option, which is no longer recognized by the latest xorg.
I'm a very happy camper again!

OK that just confused the hell out of me. Thought we went back in time for a second there...
