Re: Improved subpixel font rendering

What are the advantages of the -lcd -ubuntu and -cleartype packages?

Are there any package or initiative about merging them all?

Fonts look awful with standard packages for me (LCD). With -ubuntu, all is good.

Re: Improved subpixel font rendering

Well this topic isn't too old so I'm not afraid to bump it a bit.  I'm on an lcd - 1280 x 800.  I found that using the -ubuntu fonts, msft fonts, 88 DPI, hinting on, AA on, autohinter off, and hint type: slight yield results that actually manage to look better than XP's cleartype.  Obviously this is only true for certain fonts where an equivalent linux version exists.  Here's a screenshot:

Edit: I tried -lcd but it was far too blurry to be looked at for longer than 10 minutes.  -cleartype was pretty good but often seemed to yield mishapen characters or oversharpness.  Or the characters would be too far spaced apart.
