Solved.

I uninstalled the nvidia driver.
Compiled my own driver from nvidia and the problem is 100% resolved. big_smile Yay!!!!

well, i have VIA on my PC. i am using "openchrome" driver rather than than "xf86-video-via" and now i am getting 70% less lock-ups .

Re: X freezes (UNSOLVED)

I have AMD 2200 processor and NVidia chipset + NVidia graphics card. I installed the graphics drivers myself too and now I don't get freezes as often.  I have noticed that they usually happen when I use swiftfox. Also one time, when the keyboard froze, I left it as it was and didn't reboot. I went to sleep and after 2-3 hours, when I got back, the computer was working normally.

Nvidia driver is really a total-crap. i am sure now, too many distro forums are filled with Nvidia driver problems

Re: X freezes (UNSOLVED)

Hello,
I have similar problem like other users here. I'm able to reproduce it quite easily, just when i launch screensaver setup (from gnome menu), my X freezes, I can move the mouse cursor, but that' pretty much all I can do, can't click anything, can't do Ctrl+Alt+Fn, nothing, just hard reset. I noticed this some time before and I hoped new drivers/X/kernel will fix this. Yesterday I did whole system update (including new nvidia drivers), and it didn't help, my box freezed just after i launched screensaver properties window, maybe while it was trying to render screensaver preview? To me, this is major, as everything stability related, and this can't be HW or overheat problem, as for WinXP I don't get any lockups.
My box: Core2Duo, nVidia7600GT, nvidia drivers, running compiz.

Re: X freezes (UNSOLVED)

For those with NVidia cards and VIA chipsets.... there is a patch for the driver. It worked for me.

Here's a link to the NVidia forums. Scroll down to where the NVidia employee offers the experimental patch with instructions. Worked for me. smile

Re: X freezes (UNSOLVED)

hello.
I have just installed the new driver http://us.download.nvidia.com/XFree86/L … 1-pkg1.run and after this i had no more freezes! the NVIDIA package from the extra-repo still uses the http://us.download.nvidia.com/XFree86/L … 1-pkg0.run, i think this was without patch.
Before this I got random freezes if I started a beryl-session from kdm with no response of anything except the reset button, in normal kde-session i had no freeze. perhaps this was a problem of the driver with the combination AthlonX2/Geforce 7600GT/ ATi RS480...

Re: X freezes (UNSOLVED)

According to the NVidia forms there are some incompatibilities between the linux driver and VIA chipsets. Driver 100.14 is partially patched, but they didn't fully patch it for some reason. To quote NVIDIA:

"I found that the workaround referred to earlier is incomplete in 100.14.xx, supporting reports of a regression since 1.0-96xx"

I had the same problem as Madi, but the newest drivers still crashed on me. So I used the patch from NVidia. I recommend trying the "plain" driver first and if that doesn't work trying the experimental patch. Mind you, the patch is only for those with VIA chipsets on their motherboard.

new try: disabled Option "AddARGBGLXVisuals", disabled composite in xorg.conf and activate xgl to use beryl... perhaps it's more stable if i don't use these nvidia-driver-components...?!

Thanks for information Madi, I've tried update to 100.14 and the freeze problem is still there. And as I don't have VIA chipset the patch has no use to me. Anyway, I hope this will be fixed sometime...

Re: X freezes (UNSOLVED)

hi

a few tries later: after i had several freezes i applied the "maxcpus=1"-parameter to my boot options and after that no more freezes appeared... i hope nvidia (it's the suggestion the nvidia-driver causes the problem) will fix this multicore-processor-issue (if i'm right?!)... So i'm glad that i can use compiz fusion and all this at the moment...

Re: X freezes (UNSOLVED)

Has anyone noticed what other applications are running when the computer freezes? I have a suspicion that it has to do something with network applications (mostly firefox and thunderbird). Due to the random nature of the problem I can't confirm anything.

oggb4mp3 wrote:

I am experiencing two distinct X freezing issues that it seems people are describing here, and I am not sure which one this thread ended up being about, so I will post both experiences.  I have also posted this info to the bug report on this issue.

I also had hard freezes begin to appear when I upgraded to nvidia 100.14.11.  The machine completely freezes with no log message.  I can't even ssh into the box.  I rolled back to 100.14.09 and they appear to have stopped.

I will also say that I am experiencing the other X freezing that people are complaining about.  The mouse still moves, but does appear to interact with any elements on the screen.  This problem seems to present itself after the computer has been idle for some time.  I have a dual-core proc and I can ssh in to the box and look at the CPU stats in htop while this is going on, the two cores sitch back and forth on high cpu usage.  Core0 will show the x process at 90+% cpu for a couple of seconds, then core1 will take on the load, then core0, etc.  If you wait long enough, it seems that the system actually is responding to mouse clicks, just very slowly.  One time I left the machine alone for about fifteen minutes and it appeared to have stopped, although I have not been able to recreate this.

I have tried to look for a pattern based on which apps were left open, whether beryl was running or not, etc. and I can't seem to find a common denominator other than it usually is occurring when I sit down at the machine after being away for some time.

I also have both problems but i'm using an ATi card with fglrx. So i does not seem to be a gfx driver issue or maybe there are several issues? I had a sysmonitor running in superkaramba when the freeze where you can move the mouse happened(yes it was still updating) and saw the same behaviour for the cores(one core at full load, the other idle). BTW I'm not using any 3d desktop effects.
My specs are
Asus M2A-VM(AMD 690G) motherboard
2Gb PC6400  ram
AMD X2 4600 CPU
ATi X1800XT GPU
Creative Audigy 4 audio

I installed yesterday the ck kernel and no freezes so far. Sure firefox freezes from time to time but doesn't freeze the whole xorg with it. I will keep testing and I will report back.

Same. What I only can do is move mouse pointer and press Alt + Ctrl + Backspace, which restarts my X server and computer works fine then. Tried using nv driver instead of nvidia, but problem left.

I used to have frequent crashed with the nvidia 100.x series until I added the following to my append line in grub:

idle=poll pci=nommconf

Worth a shot? smile

This is very strange, since I reinstalled arch a couple of days ago, kept the same xorgconfig and everything else more or else exactly the same i started having random lockups.
2 times so far. One time in Gnome, and just recently in openbox. Bloody annoying.

I just got my laptop back from repair and it's doing this. I noticed it before with beryl, but killing beryl gave me control back, so I don't think it's the same problem. Now it's doing it every day using only kwin. Applications I'm usually running: konsole, superkaramba, kwallet, kmix, konqueror, kontact, kopete, kpowersave, knetworkmanager.

hi
after a long time i found and installed the new beta driver 169.07 from the nvidia page: it seems to work without anymore freezes - with compiz fusion eye candy enabled and both cores of my cpu (up to 169.04 i had to use maxcpus=1 boot option to avoid freezes!)...

Re: X freezes (UNSOLVED)

I have the same problem as most of you guys around here. The only difference is that I use the legacy nvidia driver 71xx with a Geforce 4 Mx 420 Go. Since there is no patch for it, I'll just have to wait .
I seem to have found a pattern. My X freezez only when popup windows appear like:
Save file in OpenOffice writer, Skype Send File, right click in a Pidgin window, Account Settings in Thunderbird, and so on..
The result is the same, everything freezez, I can still move the mouse, amarok is still playing music, my cpu goes up to full load as I can hear my laptop fans go wild. All I can do is power the laptop off and reboot.
This is getting very frustating, especially when I don't save my work.

Does anyone have an older nvidia legacy 71xx package? That might help .

Thank you for your link. There are indeed older releases there but none of them builds successfully. Kernel headers are installed, it starts to build but it doesn't complete succesfully and throws out a ton of make errors in the log. *sigh*
