Re: no menus and cannot run applications under gnome?

This problem also occurs to me, might it be nesl247's repo that's broken it?

Anyway, I guess there's no real way to fix this is there? How should one go about downgrading when pacman doesn't support downgrading, and I have no older packages on my system? Did gnome just break forever?

Re: no menus and cannot run applications under gnome?

voidzero, do you have kde installed? kdemod specifically. If so, remove all of kdemod. That's what I did, everything went back to normal.

Re: no menus and cannot run applications under gnome?

I found something.

libX11-1.1.3-4  includes /etc/profile.d/xorg.sh, whereas previously xproto-7.0.10-1 included the file.
So i think if you are not on the newest update with both packages the XDG Data dirs environment is missing so your desktop environment can't find its applinks.

This seems to imply that you must have libX11 and not libX11-xcb installed.

Re: no menus and cannot run applications under gnome?

@nesl247, I don't have kdemod installed:

# pacman -Qs kde
local/amarok-base 1.4.7-1
    amaroK - a media player for KDE
local/fam 2.7.0-9
    File Alteration Monitor - used by KDE, GNOME and others
local/icon-naming-utils 0.8.5-1
    Maps the new names of icons for Tango to the legacy names used by the GNOME
    and KDE desktops.
local/kde-common 3.5.7-1 (kde)
    Artwork and config stuff for KDE
local/kdelibs 3.5.7-5 (kde)
    KDE Core Libraries
local/koffice 1.6.3-2
    An integrated Office suite for KDE
anubis ~ # pacman -Qs libX11
local/libx11-xcb 1.1.3-1
    X11 client-side library

Also it's impossible for me to install libx11 instead of libX11-xcb:

# pacman -S libx11
resolving dependencies... done.
looking for inter-conflicts...
:: libx11 conflicts with libx11-xcb. Remove libx11-xcb? [Y/n] y
done.
error: failed to prepare transaction (could not satisfy dependencies)
:: libx11-xcb requires aalib
:: libx11-xcb requires dbus
:: libx11-xcb requires libwmf
:: libx11-xcb requires libxext
:: libx11-xcb requires libxfixes
:: libx11-xcb requires libxkbfile
:: libx11-xcb requires libxrender
:: libx11-xcb requires libxt
:: libx11-xcb requires sdl
:: libx11-xcb requires startup-notification
:: libx11-xcb requires x264
:: libx11-xcb requires xorg-xinit
:: libx11-xcb requires compiz-git
:: libx11-xcb requires tk
:: libx11-xcb requires amsn

The trick where I tried to copy /etc/xdg/menus/applications.menu to ~/.config/menus helped only for the kde icons... certainly not for all. Is it smart to try and reinstall all gnome apps again?

Re: no menus and cannot run applications under gnome?

voidzero, xorg.sh is included with libx11 1.1.3-4 and is not in libx11-xcb 1.1.3-1. It used to be included with xproto-7.0.10-1 but is now not included with xproto-7.0.10-2

Re: no menus and cannot run applications under gnome?

I see.

Anyway, I have tried to update all of my gnome, gnome-extra and compiz-fusion-git packages and this has not resolved the issue. So I still have lost my entire menu structure and icons.... got more clues, guys?

Re: no menus and cannot run applications under gnome?

Perhaps someone could file a bug for libX11-xcb to include the xorg.sh script.

Re: no menus and cannot run applications under gnome?

Ah, what's libx11-xcb have to do with this? And what xorg.sh script. libx11-xcb is a the same thing as libx11 except without the --without-xcb.

Re: no menus and cannot run applications under gnome?

Hi, I had the same problem after an update ... (I have the testing repository too).
Empty application menu and no icons (or very few). KDE works well (icons and menu)
I uninstalled and reinstalled few packages related to XDG menus w/o success.

I'm currently upgrading to gnome 2.19, I'll tell you if that solves the problem. if tht doesn't work, I'll disable testing.

Re: no menus and cannot run applications under gnome?

I don't know exactly why is that, but as I posted late last night at kdemod forum, I installed libx11 over libx11-xcb forcing dependencies and the menu issue was solved. In addittion, I had previously removed all X stuff  (including libx11-xcb) in my other computer, and installed everything again from testing and the problem had been solved. That's what made my think the problem was already solved, but when upgraded to testing my main computer, the issue was still there. Then I saw the info posted by dunkel at kdemod about libx11 and tried forcing the installation of libx11 (I didn't even remember I had libx11-xcb installed), and IT WORKED.

Re: no menus and cannot run applications under gnome?

Aha, reading that forum and I understand now. I've now removed libx11-xcb from the aur, and from the compiz-fusion repo. The testing repo is now required.

Re: no menus and cannot run applications under gnome?

i think if you install libx11 and xproto from current that the menus reappear, mine are back now after doing that

"pacman -S current/libx11 current/xproto" should work

Re: no menus and cannot run applications under gnome?

The issue was for those that had libx11-xcb and used the testing repo. xorg.sh was move to libx11, which libx11-xcb didn't contain.

Re: no menus and cannot run applications under gnome?

Yikes what an insidious error.

My icons themes stopped working recently and I was troubleshooting, but I wasn't even remotely on the right track.

How did you guys discover that the problem was with a missing xorg.sh? I was obviously using the libx11-xcb package
but never suspected it.

Thanks for the thread, saved me endless flailing about.
