I think it's ttf-ms-fonts. Add  export MOZ_DISABLE_PANGO=1 to /etc/profile, and logoff, then M, k.... won't have a shadow, but only in Medium hinting.

I would suggest installing *-ubuntu instead of *-lcd because those are newer and required by Firefox 3.
