Re: Arch on Eee PC

I have alsa-utils installed.

I have found the acpi package to check my battery status with 'acpi -V'. However, is there some KDE applet for this? I could not find one.
Just tested if skype would work, it worked, except for my microphone...

I'm going to check the EEE users forum a bit smile

It's not kde-specific, but there is Conky, try it! big_smile

I have not try it, but check alsamixer settings (also the ones hidden, pressing the TAB key) and don't forget to save the settings with 'alsactl store'

Re: Arch on Eee PC

I'm using fluxbox now, with conky to check my battery with 'acpi -V'. However, it shows the percentage battery life left, but not the time. It says: 'rate information unavailable'.

My microphone works all of a sudden, which is strange since I didn't change anything yikes Don't hear me complaining tho wink

There is one thing that's annoying me the most: If I shutdown my EEE, it does almost, but not all the way. It just stays on and I have to hold the power button for some secs to shut it down. I have seen this around the net, where the solution was to add a line to /etc/rc.d.rc.6 or /etc/modprobe.d/shutdown or something. I tried to follow these sugestions, but none of those files are on my system.

Is anyone else having this problem?

Have you try out this solution on the wiki?

If your Eee won't shutdown properly (i.e. the power indicator led is on but the LCD screen is off), then by adding the following line

echo -n "0000:00:1b.0" > /sys/bus/pci/drivers/HDA\ Intel/unbind

To your /etc/rc.local.shutdown should fix the problem.

Re: Arch on Eee PC

Where do you find the acpi-eee package?  Does it have the "acpi" executable you are referring to?

Re: Arch on Eee PC

Here you are:

http://koti.kapsi.fi/~ighea/eee/acpi-eee/

You also need to install acpid and start it as daemon at boot (via rc.conf), modify /etc/acpi/events/anything as stated by pacman during the acpi-eee package install, and launch /usr/bin/asusosd if you want the fancy on screen display! smile

After that, see /etc/acpi/eee.conf for further customisation.

Any thoughts on this?

To make the F5 F6 F7 F8 F9 keys work you should setup some files like /etc/acpi/eee.conf
To make work the sound keys on the eeepc900 u should change /etc/acpi/events/volume-up(/down/toggle) with the right mixer control names.

For example change from line-out to master in the volume-up script.

As for 701, F7-F9 should work by default with no modification to eee.conf. If they don't, run alsamixer in console, press Fn+F7-F9, and check what happens (or doesn't).

For 900, you need to tweak /usr/bin/volume_control.sh as well (if you use OSD). Not only control name but some logic must be modified. Here's mine:
http://archeee.depot.googlepages.com/volume_control.sh

BTW recently I found volume-mute function doesn't work on 900. acpi-eee scripts and OSD work, but the sound isn't muted actually. I can't mute it even if I use alsamixer to set Master, Front, etc to 'MM', when it's played on speaker. On headphone it does work, though. Weird...

I confirmed that mute issue happens on Ubuntu, too. Maybe 900 users must wait till alsa supports 900.

Re: Arch on Eee PC

New kernel (2.6.25.6) uploaded and modules rebuilt. I've switched madwifi away from the HAL patch and instead it now uses the newest HAL version available which is currently in a branch in the madwifi SVN repository. It should get merged to core soon and then we will have a nice simple driver build with no patches needed. Let me know if anyone is having wireless problems.

Re: Arch on Eee PC

Thanks for your work toofishes!  Didn't have any wireless problems here.

One hardware question for you all:  what's the highest resolution you can run on an external display plugged to the eee 701 (without bad hacks, bios updates or so...)?  I'm planning to get a new wide screen monitor, and I would like to know if 1680x1050 is supported before buying anything.  If it's not the case, I think I'll go for a 19" (1440x900)!

I've hooked it up to my 40" HDTV without problems at a sweet 1290x1080 resolution, so I wouldn't have too many worries- it will drive whatever you throw at it.

Re: Arch on Eee PC

The wiki entry about installing says to read this thread for better instructions but as this thread is currently at 32 pages I'm sure I'll probably miss something if I try to go through it all.

Can anyone summarize the current position on running the install?

And does it make any difference that I'll be installing on a 900?

I've got Arch running on loads of machines so I'm not after how to setup arch, just anything specific to the eee.

Re: Arch on Eee PC

Thank you toofishes, when I see how well your kernel perform on the eeepc it makes me want to try to build a one for my desktop computer (I just hope to have a little more free time).

Can anyone summarize the current position on running the install?

Start with the RC iso, put it on a USBStick. Don't forget to use toofishes kernel'n co and ighea's package : http://koti.kapsi.fi/~ighea/eee/acpi-eee/
You can download everything and put it on the USBStick before, and everything should be working. A xorg.conf could be a good idea to, ie : http://koti.kapsi.fi/~ighea/eee/xorg.conf

The topic was more usefull for the dirty fixes when no proper solutions where available.

Regarding installation, there *should* be no difference between 701 and 900 except for xorg.conf because of screen resolution. For 900 specific behavior and workaround, read my post, just two pages before wink, and some follow-ups:

Reading the changelog of alsa 1.0.17rc1 http://www.alsa-project.org/main/index.php/Changes_v1.0.16_v1.0.17rc1#HDA_Codec_driver we can hope that microphone problems will be solved with next alsa relase. We can actually read, among other improvements, that:

hda-codec - Fix ALC662 recording

which is the realtek chip of eeepc 900 soundcard.

Re: Arch on Eee PC

@toofishes: hello!
i use your kernel...everything is working perfectly!

but now i got a huawei e220 umts modem (http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Huawei_E220) and the usb-storage und usbserial modules are not included in your kernel....how can i get them? (maybe its a stupid question...but i really dont know)....if i boot with the stock kernel the modules are there.....

cheers
stefan

edit: i switched and use the stock kernel with dkites modules now....but i cant use resume anymore because of the missint usb persist support in the kernel (i have my home on the sd card)...so the question remains: any way to get the umts modem working with toofishes kernel?

Re: Arch on Eee PC

Hi at all,
I wondering if someone managed to solve this issue with uvesafb...

uvesafb: failed to execute /sbin/v86d
uvesafb: make sure that the v86d helper is installed and executable
uvesafb: Getting VBE info block failed (eax=0x4f00, err=-2)
uvesafb: vbe_init() failed with -22
uvesafb: probe of uvesafb.0 failed with error -22

I tried to install v86d but it did nothing.

You'll have to put v86d into initrd image, but that might not still work, becouse uvesafb is still(?) compiled in to the kernel-eee. Please, correct me if I'm wrong.

Re: Arch on Eee PC

Hi,

I have some problem with kernel-eee, my desktop shakes and balks. Im using xfce4, for example scrolling in mc running in xfce4-terminal very slow but in xterm works fine.It looks like all gtk apps are very slow. It looks like something wrong with 2D, opengl apps works well.

Im using HSDPA usb modem e220, It uses usbserial and option modules, It is possible to build kernel with these modules?

Im switched back to arch stock kernel, everything works fine but there is one problem with wifi, Im using madwifi-hal-0.10.5.6-r3698-20080604 driver, It works only after first start of wifi, when I turn off and again turn on It gives HAL status 3, I found a ugly soulution, when I put ath_hal module to udev blacklist then wifi works fine, I dont know exactly why, but it works smile

and sorry for my poor english wink

why dont u use dkites eeemodule package? wifi and ethernet should work without problems!
