maybe package kdemod for smaller image next version.

At least I have left out most of the unnecessary kde packages like games and science...
I think I'll make a minimal Arch install, with just working X and maybe fluxbox too. It will be quite small.

the problem is still you & me on torrent, and 5k downloading so may take week long.

Re: Arch on Eee PC

I noticed the slow download. I've never created a torrent before, so I wondered if I had done something wrong, or if you use a modem or something... Now someone else has connected and is downloading at 40-50kb
I hope your speed is improving...

Re: Arch on Eee PC

Just an FYI:

There has been some good progress on the Eee wiki page.  Much more useful now:

http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ins … sus_EEE_PC

Still looking for info on getting the sound running, and I'm going to add an acpi/cpufreq/pm-utils section once I  get the last of those three working.

Sound?  Anyone?  wink

Re: Arch on Eee PC

ok, the wiki now contains directions on getting everything to work that I can get working.

However, I can't get the camera working or the sound.  Some help completing the docs to that point would be great.  It would have the additional benefit of getting my machine working.  smile

Also: it would be nice to develop a sane setup for pm-utils for hibernate, etc.

Re: Arch on Eee PC

To make the camera working I've compiled a custom 2.6.22 kernel and patched it with the asus_acpi patch from asus. Then I can echo 1 > /proc/acpi/asus/camera  which turns the camera on.
The reason I make my own kernel is that the patch doesn't compile with 2.6.23. I've seen some patches that are supposed to work with 23.6.23, but the links to them were broken when I tried.

I don't have any problems with sound. I've installed the lates alsa drivers, but I had sound with both the stock arch kernel and with 2.6.22 too, I think..

Re: Arch on Eee PC

I still think it's very strange that some people have problems with sound. I have had alsa working with the snd-hda-intel driver with the stock Arch 2.6.23 kernel, my own 2.6.22, and 2.6.24-rc6 kernels. All without having to do any kind of tweaking.
Has there been any reports about slightly different audio cards?

I'm not seeding right now, but I'll start seeding both the old and the new version and a minimal version soon. I still don't know why your download is so slow, though, since someone else downloaded the file at 50Kb/s earlier... Maybe there is something wrong with mine or your torrent settings.

I'm seeding the image for anyone that wants it as well...took me about 2 1/2 days to download it...so for a one-person torrent it wasn't too bad.  Now there's two...so...download away.

Re: Arch on Eee PC

Thank you filoktetes for creating the imgaes. I'm currently downloading the mini version (speed is very good, 50-60KiB/s) and once I'm done will continue to seed as long as I could. smile

PS. What hardware is working in the current image? Is webcam working?

EDIT: The image boot up just fine on my Eee, but... what is the password of the root account? tongue

EDIT2: Nevermind, I've found the password. wink

EDIT3: Hm... is there anyway I can mount the image file locally? My 2GB thumbdrive just die and I would like to copy files from image to my 512MB thumbdrive to use as an installer. I've tried 'mount -t ext2 <image file> <destination>' and 'mount -t ext2 -o loop <image file> <destination>', all to no avail.

You can set up the image as a loop device:

losetup /dev/loop0 <image>
mount /dev/loop0 <mount point>

This will not work with the Archeeemage images, since they are not images of partitions but of the whole disk, with MBR and all. You have to set the offset in the losetup to the correct value, like this:

losetup -o xxxxx /dev/loop0 <image>

But I don't know what the correct offset for where the partition starts. If someone knows, I'd like to know too smile

If you have an empty disk with one ext2 formatted partition and just copy all the files from the Archeeemage image to it. The only thing you need to make it work is to mount the partition to a <directory> and:

grub-install --no-floppy --root-directory=<directory>

filoktetes uploaded his images to my server, so grab them from there rather than using torrents, any of you who're after a faster download:

http://archeeemage.coderseffigy.com

I'm gradually getting all the Eee-centric project authors to host on my site, and will build a mini-site shortly to facilitate browsing of them.

As a sidenote, I'm interesting in using my server as an Arch repo mirror or something similarly useful for the community - is there any info about this anywhere, ie. how I could 'help out' so to speak? I can't find anything on the wiki about mirroring repos or similar... if anyone has any info relating to this, please PM me (so we don't clog up this thread). Cheers!

Re: Arch on Eee PC

Holy cow! Thank you filoktetes! I'll try it out right now. big_smile

(So, I'll just have to install this over the old kernel on my eee pc for it to work, right?)

Hm... I got this error: Clocksource tsc unstable  (delta = <some random number>) error during startup. What does this means and how do I fixes it?

UPDATE: I got GNOME up and running and noticed that there are two Laptop battery entries in the taskbar:

screenshothx2.th.png

I didn't get such duplication when I use my manually patched kernel (2.6.23-ARCH) .

Twice the power big_smile

Probably some type of kernel bug or something, unless th eeepc does indeed have to batteries (I don't own one so I dunno)

I'll look more into it, but I don't think it should cause any problems. I just think the kernel supposes a timer works in a way which it doesn't and shouldn't, and it complains just because it thinks it should. I can probably find a way for it not to think so. I'm not sure it's that, so I'll investigate further.

Hm. That's strange. I don't use gnome, but I just installed it and tested it, and it's the same here. I would just use the battery applet instead, if it bothers you... I'll think about this too, though.

I'd love to try out your kernel, but I'm having trouble installing it.  Running "pacman -S kernel26eee" gives me these errors

I'm assuming I have to remove these before I install it.  I'm unsure how to do so (in a safe way) as this is my first experience with Arch Linux.  If anyone could be me some advice I'd be grateful.

Also, when you say that it supports all the hardware, does it mean you got power management working properly?  Cause I've been trying forever to get that working with no success.

The conflicting files are from madwifi-utils. I should remove them from the kernel. Overwriting them like you did shouldn't cause any problems, though.

Does power work correctly for you now? My only problem is that the kde power manager gets confused, since the eee reports the battery state in percent. Conky understands it perfectly. smile

Re: Arch on Eee PC

Yes, suspend seems to work perfectly.  I still have one problem with suspend, but its not your doing.  Apparently, ever since 2.6.21, they've removed support for USB_PERSIT in the kernel.  This effects how USB jump drives and the SD card slot are remounted upon resuming.  I have an 8 gig SD card that I was planning on mounting as my /home partition.  However, half the time it comes off of suspend, it comes back as /dev/sdc instead of /dev/sdb which screws stuff up.  Patching the kernel to allow this is easy enough, I just haven't gotten around to it yet.  Here is the patch, I do believe - http://kerneltrap.org/mailarchive/linux … /29/459131

Other than that, everything else seems to work fine.  I only have one battery reporting icon, which seems to be functioning properly (using GNOME).  Haven't tried the webcam yet, as I really don't have use for such a thing, but I'll try it eventually.

Thanks again.

Are you using filoktetes kernel?  Thats the only way I've been able to get it to work.  For me, it worked right away with his kernel.  Without it, I'm not sure.
