Wow. I tried it on a separate install I keep for exactly this purpose - trying out dodgy stuff I'm worried might break my system - and hey presto, it works! DRI, the composite extension and everything, without having to tell it. The only thing is it defaults to a US keyboard layout, and the buttons on my mouse (which is always a problem: 4 buttons, X sees them as 1,2,3, and 9
) are wrong, so I'll have to make up a proper xorg.config, but at least it isn't killing my system any more. ![]()
Now to do it on my real Arch partition, and take out all those IgnorePkgs from pacman.conf...

i don't have an ati, but a nvidia gforce 7300go and "about" the same problem. i can start up X though. kdm is running fine, but when i try to log in the whole machine just stops.
