Re: Hwd 5.x, help to improve -- PCMCIA, USB, and other external hw

what's hwd meant to do now anyway? udev handles all the drivers marvelously, and xorg is beginning to do a great job of xorg.conf.

Also, hwd 5x is bust here as lshwd is segfaulting.

Hwd does no longer use lshwd. Its now a front end of pciutils and usbutils, listing name of the hardwares with related modules. And xorg driver. Simply, letting the user know the hardwares and generates a xorg.conf.

From the posts here, shows there are users who still want to keep hwd updated.

hwd -x uses mkxcfg, which uses lshwd. I've got nothing against updating hwd... I just want to know what it's useful for.

No, mkxcfg is part of hwd and depended on ddcxinfo-arch.

As an idea, what about having hwd as part of hwdetect? Both are bash scripts.

Whats the difference between using hwd and "X -configure" to create an xorg.conf?

Well, for me , I can use 'hwd -xa'  to generate and install a xorg.conf on the fly while running X, but I can't use 'X -configure' to do it while running X! smile

Hwd's script in creating xorg.conf is a copy of Knoppix live cd, designed to work for all vga cards. What X -configure does, I have not studied.

Whats the difference between using hwd and "X -configure" to create an xorg.conf?

Hwd's script in creating xorg.conf is a copy of Knoppix live cd, designed to work for all vga cards. What X -configure does, I have not studied.

Well, it does the same; and much better than knoppix. (at least since xorg 7.3)

Thanks to ddcxinfo-arch by z4ziggy (developer of lshwd).

For my information, is Damir Perisa still the maintainer of hwd? I flagged three days ago  hwd as out-of-date and also sent an email, but no respond. Not a problem, got version 5.1 ready.

hwd -x uses mkxcfg, which uses lshwd.

No, mkxcfg is part of hwd and depended on ddcxinfo-arch.

As an idea, what about having hwd as part of hwdetect? Both are bash scripts.

iphitus@laptop:~$ pacman -Qo `which mkxcfg`
/usr/bin/mkxcfg is owned by hwd 5.0-1

iphitus@laptop:~$ grep lshwd /usr/bin/mkxcfg
# mkxcfg - make X config, using ddcxinfo and lshwd output, by z4ziggy
LISTFILE=/tmp/lshwd.out
# check if lshwd output files are available already, execute lshwd if not
        lshwd -a -ox -m > $LISTFILE

Password:
[root@laptop iphitus]# hwd -x
/usr/bin/mkxcfg: line 270: 10976 Segmentation fault lshwd -a -ox -m > $LISTFILE
Your sample file is ready.

It uses lshwd, lshwd is segfaulting.

So again... what does hwd do better then udev/X -configure? If it were to be merged with hwdetect... it'd have to have some sort of advantage. hwdetect is also no longer used... replaced by udev.

Re: Hwd 5.x, help to improve -- PCMCIA, USB, and other external hw

Thanks for pointing out. I forgot there was a small part requiring lshwd in xorg.conf. The device section.

Section "Device"
    Identifier "Card0"
    Driver "vesa"
    VendorName "All"
    BoardName "All"
EndSection

But it can  now be created by one xorgtable which is included.... adds the name of driver.

I have to study what udev and X -configure do before I can give a proper answer.
