Re: Hwd 5.x, help to improve -- PCMCIA, USB, and other external hw

Hey folks, I had an idea.

You know, all those nice device names in the lspci and lsusb output come from two files in /usr/share/hwdata, namely pci.ids and usb.ids. Usually those get refreshed when pciutils and usbutils get updated upstream.

Now take a look at them, both contain a comment at the top on how to fetch the newest version, and -- that's my point -- on how to send updates.
I've noticed that lsusb output sometimes only contains the manufacturer name but no device info, see the postings above for example.

As I have a few devices myself with missing infos, I first downloaded the newest file from http://www.linux-usb.org/usb.ids and ran lsusb again in the same directory where I placed the file. Et voila, one of them showed up with a proper description (a bluetooth dongle) and another one got a bit more verbose (my mouse). cd / and run lsusb again to see the difference.
Now I made a copy of usb.ids, added two devices, ran diff -u usb.ids usb.ids.new > usb.ids.patch and sent that to the maintainer:

--- usb.ids 2007-11-28 10:01:18.000000000 +0100

@Rasat: What's exactly the point then, listing lsusb output here for hwd, when you're using usbutils anyway?

Re: Hwd 5.x, help to improve -- PCMCIA, USB, and other external hw

FYI, I was wondering why kinfocenter (that KDE tool in the "System" menu) showed other names for my USB devices:

sudo lsusb -v | egrep 'iManufacturer|iProduct'

I hate sigs. This one only exists to remind myself to get an avatar.

Why not using the update-pciids and update-usbids commands for updating the db?

Ah, cool. Yes, running those two as root will update the device lists in /usr/share/hwdata.

So, nobody else having something to contribute to the device list maintainer?

Re: Hwd 5.x, help to improve -- PCMCIA, USB, and other external hw

For your all information, there is a bug in "hwd -x" (xorg.conf) and xorgtable is corrupted. Will be fixed in version 5.2

EDIT
xorgtable is fixed. Run "hwd -u" to update.

1-Dec-2007, version 5.2
- major script change in /usr/bin/hwd
- fixed mouse configure in /usr/bin/mkxcfg
- fixed xorgtable
- usb hw detect

Re: Hwd 5.x, help to improve -- PCMCIA, USB, and other external hw

What is the difference between -s and -e options?
I have 2 soundcards and 2 ethernet cards. In simple mode only one {sound, ethernet} card is printed.

Hwd -e shows all hardwares. In -s hardwares which users are directly working with like sound, vga, ethernet, etc. Currently shows one hardware. Multiple hardwares in 5.3.x. In 5.2.x trying to get hwd to work properly.

Re: Hwd 5.x, help to improve -- PCMCIA, USB, and other external hw

Why hwd gives snd-intel-ich instead of snd_intel8x0 and snd-yamaha-ds-1-pci instead of snd_ymfpci?

Re: Hwd 5.x, help to improve -- PCMCIA, USB, and other external hw

Hwd reads the output of pciutils vendor and device id and match with uevent. When I find errors as your, I correct them in hwd script. Better solution if using a table, which can be updated. In next version I will add this feature.
