-OS: Arch on Pentium2 and above. Debian testing on lower then p2.
-Windowmanager: IceWM with icebuntu theme (looks good)
-Browser: opera (fastest browser with full features, otherwise links or dillo)
-editor: vim and nedit
-screen (so useful!)
-music: xmms, uses least cpu, and I've tried all musicplayers. (mp3blaster with low quality sound is perhaps lower but not near as useable)
-imageviewer: xzgv
-videoplayer: mplayer
-video transcoding: mencoder
-writing cds : graveman
- system monitor: htop
- file manager: emelfm and mc
- ftp: lftp (think its bit better then ncftp)
- pdf: xpdf
- office: abiword, openoffice
- terminal: aterm (if unicode required: rxvt-unicode)
-images resizing etc to put on internet: imagemagick
-image editor: gimp
- email: muttng and sylpheed-claws

...

As is true for most people I know, I've always loved learning. As is also true for most people I know, I always hated school. Why is that?

Re: » The Best Light and Fast Applications - 2007 LnF Awards

Hya! Noob posting, but I've been lurking for a while now.

Distro: Arch, obviously, but I've had a long time running OS-love-affair with Vector Linux (5.9 out!)
WM: Awesome and Fluxbox. I've discovered Awesome recently, but it's all I've been using.
Terminal: urxvt (rocks!)
File Manager: PCManFM. I also use Emelfm (don't like the GTK2 version, though)
Browser: Opera and Kazehakase. Not exactly light, right? In that category Dillo's the best (compiled with tabs and  everything else) but I also love good ol'Lynx. Midori will one day rock a few people's world. But Opera is just the best there is...
Email: mutt + getmail + procmail + msmtp and Claws-Mail (depends on which email account I'm using)
Text Editor: Beaver and Leafpad for GUI; nano for quick tweaking dotfiles and Geany when I need an extra lil'help
Office: Abiword + Gnumeric. I use KeyJnote for presentations.
Music Player: XMMS. It's unbeatable... lightest on resources there is, even than any terminal app, apart from, probably, cplay (which I also use)
Video Player: VLC
Messaging: Psi - it's the Opera of internet messengers.
System Monitor: htop and a little customized statusbar script I use in Awesome
Organizer: Osmo - Handy Personal Organizer, one of my favourite apps nowadays. Also, something I also use on my Nokia N800 - Contacts + Tasks + Dates, but Osmo replaces those 3 in one single app.
Torrent Client: rtorrent. This is becoming quite the standard, heh?
Mixer: alsamixer
CD / DVD Burning: Pyburn (yep, Judd's fine script) for CD's and the only K* app I use... K3b
Image Viewer: gPicview (same developper as PCManFM)
PDF Viewer: ePDFview
RSS: Raggle, but is there anything lighter than that? Anything other than snownews?
Image Editor: mtpaint

And so on, and so on...

Yep, that would make it unbeatable. One can still use transports and all. I connect to MSN through a transport, to exchange messages with those-who-will-not-relinquish-outdated&closed-protocols.

Still, even if it's just for Jabber, I find it is the most complete Jabber client available. And it's quite light compared to a few of the others (Gajim, for instance - which is a Python app).

I still keep Pidgin around, though. The transports are not as reliable as the real deal, unfortunately.

BTW, you seem like the person (great, great Xmonad "desktop"!) who could help me on this: any other light, preferably terminal based RSS readers you know of and recommend? Other than Raggle and snownews? big_smile

Distro:Arch (Duh)
WM: Awesome and Openbox
Terminal: Terminal
File Manager: Terminal (Xfce_
Browser: I use Firefox 3.0beta here, but skipstone and kazehakase are both great
Email:Gmail.com FTW
Text Editor: nano and medit
Office: Abiword + Gnumeric.
Music Player: MPD + Sonata or ncmpc
Video Player: VLC
Messaging:Miranda, ideally - but pidgin has to do on the *Nixes.
System Monitor: Conky
Organizer: I use the Google offerings, but they aren't great...
Torrent Client:This has been an issue for me as of late, but Linkage
Mixer: Volwheel (If that qualifies)
CD / DVD Burning: Another issue - but graveman was good while it worked for me.
Image Viewer: gImmage
PDF Viewer: ePDFview
RSS: http://www.netvibes.com
Image Editor: gimp/inkscape for anything heavy, but mtpaint for really light work

That's exactly the point. You think I haven't already done my best to ditch Pidgin? tongue
As for the stupid MSN protocol, I don't know how to convert people to Jabber, since some of the "basic" IM features don't work on Google Talk at least (file transfer, voice, video, and very very sadly, people base their choice on emoticons availability -.-).

Onyros wrote:

Thanks for the compliment smile
Unfortunately (for you) I never use feeds, I get messed up with too much information all in one place. So far I have tried Google Reader, Sage (a Firefox extension), and Liferea, I have used them a couple of times and got instantly fed up with them. They're not minimalistic anyway, so I'm offtopic tongue

To compensate, I suggest you to give a look at Mcabber, a CLI Jabber client, which is quite cool.

Text Editor: Vim.  Obv.
Office: Abiword and unfortunately OpenOffice for presentations.  I'm installing MS Office 2003 for this purpose.  Seriously.  It's 150x faster than OOo in cx wine.
Music Player: I don't listen to music.  MPD + Sonata if I must.

PDF Viewer: ePDFview + evince

I read too many RSS feeds to use anything but GReader.

You got my curiosity, and I have looked for a CLI feed reader. I have found Nrss, a ncurses based one. It's very nice: basic clever features, easy to use. A deal for me. It's in AUR.

More info here.

Re: » The Best Light and Fast Applications - 2007 LnF Awards

Since we can make and ask suggestions, I want to ask if anyone knows a good simple CLI email client. I have used mutt for some time, but I find it too complicated and full of options. I mainly need to read mail, delete it and reply. Nothing fancy tongue

finferflu: you might want to give alpine a try. Pine's been a pain in the butt and it's commercial (AFAIK?), but alpine looks more promising...

I'm still a mutt addict, though wink

Re: » The Best Light and Fast Applications - 2007 LnF Awards

Thanks Mantaar, Alpine is exactly what I needed. Plain and simple, with no need of using Fetchmail, chronjobs, and so on. I'm not really planning to use it to send mail, but this is annoying, I'm not able to send it and I get this error:

Error sending: no default posting command

I tried googling, but I can't find how to set this command, and I don't even know what to set...

Re: » The Best Light and Fast Applications - 2007 LnF Awards

I'll post what I use - I try to use light apps when possible but I'm not willing to sacrifice usability for minimalism:

OS: Arch
WM: Awesome (or Openbox - depending on my mood, rarely as of late, though)
Terminal: urxv(d,c) (xterm is a decent alternative, especially since I don't use transparency anyways)
Browser: Firefox (extensions, can't live without them)
Email: Thunderbird (I've experimented with everything else and I always come back to Thunderbird)
Music: mpd/Sonata (or ncmpc as client sometimes, also mpc for keybindings)
Tagger: easytag
Ipod: gtkpod
Text editor: vim (medit if I need a gui, but I don't remember last time I did)
Documents: texlive (I'm still in the process of learning, but all my end of semester papers were typeset in LaTeX already)
PDF Viewer: Acroread 8 (not as light as the alternatives but renders fonts much better than others - if you read lots of PDFs it's a must)
Image editor: Gimp (no competition)
Image viewer: Mirage (or feh)
File manager: CLI, mc (or thunar if I need to browse images, for example)
Burning: bashburn (there is a shortage of good light burning apps but bashburn is perfectly sufficient for my needs)
Torrents: rtorrent (the best, especially when used with screen)
Video player: mplayer (I also have vlc installed but hardly ever use it)
Communications: Skype
System monitor: htop + scripts for Awesome bar (conky in Openbox)

Hey, thanks for looking into that! I thought I was a bit unfair to Snownews and decided to give it another go.

After using it for a couple of days, I found that I actually read more of the feeds' content than by skimming with the 3 layered display Raggle offers.

But I'll certainly take a look at Nrss, thanks for the suggestion smile

If you need any help in configuring mutt to be as simple as you want it to be, give me a holler. I've got a fairly easy config I'll be glad to share, working pretty well with Gmail and everything.

Thanks, I had Mutt all set up and such, then I have reinstalled Arch, and I miss some packages for fetching the mail. All the configs are still in my home since it's on a different partition. What mostly annoys me with mutt is the fact that I need to use external apps to fetch, send and sort the mail. I have to set up chronjobs and so on. Too much hassle for me. I only needed a simple app that fetched my mail on its own. I have set up Alpine to use IMAP with Google and it's fantastic, apart from the fact I am not able to send mail. But I just use it for work, to check whether there are new tickets, so I don't need to reply via mail client.
Thanks for your help anyway smile

OS: Arch
WM: Fluxbox--even though I don't use window tabs that much. I like the toolbar and the config files aren't in XML big_smile
Terminal: urxvt
Browser: Firefox--Thinking about switching to Opera though. I will miss the little doodad that tells me I've spent nearly 2000 hours browsing the web since last April...
Email: Thunderbird, though I haven't really tested out other clients. I should. Also, a little notifier widget cobbled together out of grep, sed, and fetchmail that sits in dzen.
Music: foobar2000 via wine. Uses a considerable amount of resources (ironically, considering it uses nothing in Windows,) but I've never found anything that lets me control every aspect of my music player so perfectly.
Video: VLC or ogle for DVDs
Text editor: vim, and rarely leafpad.
PDF: xpdf or acroread for longer reads.
Image editor: I hate gimp, but nothing else is any better.
Image viewer: gqview
File manager: thunar. I figure if I need to do something that can't be accomplished with coreutils, it might as well be graphical.
Burning: k3b. It's huge, but I figure that doesn't matter when I only need to use it occasionally.
Torrents: rtorrent on another box through screen and ssh.
IRC and such: irssi on another box through screen and ssh, with bitlbee for IM.

Re: » The Best Light and Fast Applications - 2007 LnF Awards

Name: Program in Linux + Program in Windows
Description

Email: mutt
I only check my email in Linux.

Feed Reader: GReader
GReader's Vim-esque navigation and easy of use make it a winner.

File Manager: Pcmanfm + Explorer
Sometimes I use E17's built in file manager but it's not that great.

Image Editor: GIMP
No alternative.

Instant Messenging: Pidgin + Miranda
I wish Pidgin had Miranda's customisability.

Music Player: MPD with Sonata + iTunes
They both have features I wish the other had.  I want Sonata to have drag and drop playlists and I want iTunes to have Sonata's speed.

Office: OpenOffice + StarOffice
I use OpenOffice in Linux and StarOffice in Windows if I have to.  If all else fails, I'll just default to LaTeX.

Operating System: Arch Linux + Windows XP
I use both operating system interchangably.

PDF: acroread + foxit reader
Naturally Adobe's offering renders PDFs the best.  Foxit reader is a really fast in Windows.

Terminal: rxvt-unicode
With the terminus font.

Text Editor: Vim + Notepad++
Notepad++ has great syntax highlighting but it is made for point-and-click advocates.

Torrent: rtorrent + utorrent
Both are equally great.

Web Browser: Firefox
The universal web browser.  Sometimes I use Safari in Windows though.

Window Manager: E17 + Explorer
I prefer E17.

Video Player: mplayer + vlc
Mplayer on Linux because it plays anything.  VLC with the CCCP in Windows.
