Reading around the Ubuntu and SuSE forums and elsewhere it seems that x86_64 isn't affected.
I can confirm this. On my i686 system amule and VLC are not working without workaround. On x86_64 machine both programs work as they should.

I can confirm this confirmation - exactly the same behaviour with VLC here...

The bug has been fixed and the new version of the package (xorg-server-1.4.0.90-5-i686) has been released. Wait for your mirror to get updated and the upgrade, it should fix the problem. It does for me...

Since you say that the VLC bug is fixed, do you by that mean that VLC works?
Xorg-server-1.4.0.90-4 didn't allow VLC to even start. Version *-5 fixed that, but I have no video output just sound no matter what format is used.
Does anyone know a fix? Or maybe it's just me having this problem.
Offline
did you upgrade to the latest ffmpeg version ?
this may be the problem. try downgrading ffmpeg and _rebuild_ vlc against that old ffmpeg version. it should work.
edit: try downgrading x264 as well...

I try your suggestion bankok_manouel a bit later. I'm now busy working, but when I've tested the downgrade option I report back.
Offline
I have the same problem with -5, vlc starts but no video. Deactivating the "MIT-SHM" option did not help me either I'm afraid.
Offline
Downgrading doesn't change a thing for me. VLC opens, but no video.

If you have time: downgrade ffmpeg & x264 packages and then rebuild (with abs) VLC. That should do it.
Offline
Where can I get these former releases?
Offline
have a look in /var/cache/pacman/pkg/
edit: or something similar (not in front of my Arch box ATM)

Okay ffmpeg and x264 have been dowgraded and vlc is removed. I'm not sure how to go about building VLC with ABS. And why cant I reinstall vlc with pacman? Will it upgrade those other packages again?
Offline
You could chose not to install those again. I guess reinstalling VLC should work but for an unknown reason it didn't for me. Rebuilding it did. No idea why TBH.

Would someone check the output of FFmpeg and see if swscaler is enabled. If this problem is because of the newest FFmpeg from the repos, it may be because of FFmpeg's swscaler. It's a well known problem that VLC 8.6 and swscaler do not work together. The VLC people fixed it in the upcoming 9.0.

I've removed my ~/.vlc directory and installed vlc using pacman and it's working now! Thanks for all the help smile So how can I make sure that ffmpeg, x264 and xorg-server dont get upgraded when I do a yaourt -Syu?

You can use the IgnorePkg option in /etc/pacman.conf
It is now safe to upgrade xorg-server BTW...
edit: typo

I want to warn everyone about something here. FFmpeg went through a major API restructuring between the old version in the repos and the newer one. Also, x264 had two .so bumps between here and there. Downgrading is probably going to break lots of programs that use the two.

what can be done:
rebuild ffmpeg with swscaler disabled
patch vlc wih this patch (otherwise build will fail with this version of ffmpeg)
rebuild vlc
et voila (but no swscaler)

It's really not a big deal for most users. Off the top of my, Kdenlive is the only program that I'm aware of the uses swscaler. Kdenlive barely works anyway! It's a pretty cool feature, but most people probably won't be using it anytime soon.

for those of us unaccustom to applying these patches and such.. might you be able to offer a "how-to"
that is a little more in depth?

Yes, that would be very helpful (I am experiencing the same problems after my latest pacman -Syu).

vlc ISIS\ -\ In\ Fiction\ \[Music\ Video\].mp4
VLC media player 0.8.6d Janus

VLC probably does not support this sound or video format.
