I've been using openbox for a very long time now. I was always cycling through GNOME and KDE, not liking either, until I finally settled on openbox and a fairly minimalistic desktop. This thread encouraged me to try out XFCE again, and I really, really like it! I get a very functional panel, excellent integration of programs, tons of eye candy (compared to openbox) and it's not using any more RAM than my openbox setup! I am extremely impressed.

It's fast as hell, too.

In my Openbox setup I discovered that I was using a lot of XFCE programs due to their speed, minimalistic approach, and lack of dependencies. Thunar, mousepad... So with XFCE I feel right at home.

U can also try Enlightenment e17 - it is Desktop Shell something beetween pure Window Manager (Fluxbox, Openbox, Twm) and full Desktop Environment (Gnome, Kde). It is really lightspeed and in fact quite stable (I use it for almost 2 years andhave no problems)

ive been meaning to try out pekwm. how is it compared to openbox?

actually, it's similar, but has more features. though afais the main features are comparable to openbox. pekwm has tabs, openbox doesn't. imo is openbox easier to setup. what i really miss is a autoarrange-windows function. fluxbox has one, but it's crappy.

I am near setting up X. Can you suggest me what DE or WM to use? Btw, I would like to program in gtkmm and to run gtkmm applications. Does this means I need to have GNOME? Or just the runtime and dev packages are sufficient? I need a DE or WM that can draw all the common GUI controls and is further more - minimalistic, small and blazing fast. Any ideas?

Pretty much all the top-WM's are recommended in this thread, along with XFCE. You could try Gnome and KDE, but they are both big in download and are anything but lightweight. I'd recommend you get used to XFCE and then drop the GUI one step at a time, like I'm doing now (but I started with gnome).

You can run gtk-progs in any WM or DE, but it is considered to slow your system down if you load both kdelibs and gnome-libs, plus you have to configure two WM's because KDE-progs won't be as beautiful as your themed GTK-progs and so on and so on.

Both gnome and XFCE use GTK. Use XFCE.
