Hi. I was also finding the same problem but found the solution while looking around.

The solution is to set the following property in your .Xdefaults file:

URxvt.letterSpace: -1

Sorry for reviving an old post but I felt it was important because this post is the top result on a google search. It would be great if someone could mark this as [SOLVED]

Thank you priomsrb for the solution. I love urxvt but gave up using it because of this problem.
