Hey. Misfit. It's banging a house into a boat. Don't misquote me.
On another note, I say good riddance to the inconsistencies of /dev/sdX devices. I am currently using by-label, but by-uuid is certainly superior to the standard way.
Stop looking at my signature. It betrays your nature.

Well, I figured it was even more wacky, and therefore appropriate.
I use /disk-by-label too.

jealma wrote:Why does almost nobody like the new UUID's?
Because almost everyone prefer appearance over functionality.
I dislike it because I have to edit my mountpoints everytime I format a partition. That's a functional preference.

maybe having the installer adding a comment over the fstab line would help:
i.e.
# /dev/sdd1 label Downloads
/dev/disk/by-uuid/5EEC21E9EC21BBE1 /media/Downloads ntfs-3g users,blablabla 0 0
Maybe it already does this: I don't know since I don't like breaking my installation often.

And how often do you format your partitions?
arch(3) adj amused because you think you understand something better than other people ;P

Why not have /disk-by-label instead of using UUIDS?
That just seems easier to me.

I use /disk/by-label, and you can too.
The installer script does not incorporate this function, but you can do so from another vc and then edit your fstab accordingly.

2 days ago archlinux-installer was updated to 2008.06-1.
Does it mean that new ISO-images will be released soon?
I'm going to reinstall my system, so answer is very important.

Sure, the new ISO-images will be released soon(er or later)

I think it is great to use UUID's by default, because switching from UUID's to /dev-naming is easy. The other way around (that would be from /dev-naming to UUID's) is a little bit more tricky, because you need to run "blkid" to find the UUID from a partition, then you need to type it into both fstab and menu.lst (or with >> of course).
ls -lF /dev/disk/by-uuid/
This can help you map things out quickly. If you have gpm running, you can swipe and paste between consoles.
It might be handy to paste the entire listing as a comment in fstab and menu.lst
/dev/disk/by-id/ is slightly more human readable than UUIDs, as they generally include the disk model and partition number.
After a Windows recovery program torpedoed several of my Linux partitions, scrambling the sdbx numbers, Arch booted normally using UUIDs, except my home partition was then gone:/
For me, it's worth the bother.

I like to try out new distros, so it's not all that unusual.

I have a question: Would be possible to add to the installer an option to label the partitions at format time? - I'm asking this because I'm one of those who uses a mount-by-label fstab and it doesn't feels comfortable switching back and forth from the installer to format and label a partition from the commandline.
thanks.
p.s. I know that pre-formatting and pre-labelling is still an option, but still I thought it might be worth asking.
They say that if you play a Win cd backward you hear satanic messages. That's nothing! 'cause if you play it forwards, it installs windows.

See if you can put a feature request in on the bug tracker.

um why do I only get a choice of installing the base-devel package? That doesn't even have a kernel included with it (well technically it would no doubt be installed as a dep). That's besides the point though. Is this a bug or is it for a reason I'm not understanding?

you're not reading is all. BASE is always installed now, it doesn't even ask about it. We've been assuming everyone has base installed for years already anyway (as far as package dependencies), might as well just install it.

oh well excuse my ignorance then. This is a great idea seeing that you NEED the base packages anyway. Maybe not all of them. Like you wouldn't need to have the utilities for reiserfs if you use ext3 or jfs. Maybe i'm wrong idk.
anyway, If arch is moving in this direction, why not let us install anything we want right from the install cd. I mean like x11, kde, openbox, whatever? Just an idea....

edit: well I guess I can answer my own question. FTP install offers to install anything you want from a remote location, right?

Don't know if I agree with BASE being automagically installed. Arch has always been about choice. There's about 10 packages I normally deselect from installation. Doesn't bother me too much though - can always uninstall afterwards.
flack 2.0.6: menu-driven BASH script to easily tag FLAC files (AUR)
knock-once 1.2: BASH script to easily create/send one-time sequences for knockd (forum/AUR)

+1. I like choice.
