mrxvt does not support unicode, and this is a stopper for me.
urxvt-unicode is a fine VT (using the 256-color version from AUR)

hey, doc, another +1 for all you need to do is make an .Xdefaults file and put xterm*faceName: Monospace:pixelsize-14 in it. you'd have the same problem with urxvt, except that i think it's default font is a bit bigger.

Vim, urxvt, and also Terminus font, the best goddamn font I've ever seen.
I use the same but this guy needs sakura and leafpad. perfect for what he wants.
edit
+1 for terminus being the sexiest terminal font in the history of forever.

I would go with urxvt, vim/emacs and a nice font. The problem you got with reading the small text in xterm is easily solved with just changing the font.
Here is what I use:
rxvt-unicode-256color + vim
Setting a bigger font is no prob, but imo size 12 terminus is perfect on my 20.1" ws.

I mostly use cli apps but recently have come across nice gtk2 based editor which is called tea-lite. It's basically tea, stripped down of gnome deps, and it's lighter than geany.
As for terminal I would suggest rxvt/urxvt along with terminus or monospace font
