my warranty was fine with linux... dell didnt really care, although I got a bit pissed off when they were asking me to click the start menu and go into control panel

Hi all. This exact problem, or a similar one, is happening to me. This is my first encounter with Arch and it has worked great for some time. I've got only installed a few necesary applications and Awesome as a Desktop Manager and a few KDE apps (K3B, Amarok, and Dolphin). The problem is that the computer, while having only Opera, Firefox, Amarok and RTorrent open, feels slugish... top says that it has barely any load, but switching between desktops can get v e r y slow, specially with dolphin. Sometimes, it even cuts the amarok playback for a second or two.
From the console, all CLI apps are very responsive. I also have an nvidia card (geforce 7300GT) and glxgears throws me "only" 600fps...
I should mention that it's an Arch64 install.
I've got the suspicion it could be the Flash plugin, or the binder used between the 32bit plugin and the 64bit User Agent... but again, top says it's free. Does anyone thinks I might be onto something with this suspicion?
I don't know what to try next...
My /etc/hosts is (I believe) properly configured, as I needed to do so for Apache and ntop to work.

I was having a few problems a week or so on my desktop, it was just starting to get really sluggish, for example, it'd take a couple of seconds on my machine to load a menu in firefox, removing the nvidia drivers and reinstalling them worked nicely. I also have an nVidia graphics chipset, so it might be worth just trying that.
Also with loading applications, yes it is normal to not max out the CPU when loading applications, especially on a dual core. Applications can only physically load from disk so fast. Besides on a unix based machine, it is not always best to look at cpu utilisation, your load average is a much better indicator. Try installing xosview as it gives you a good idea as to what is going on on your system at any time.

I'm using ArchLinux on ThinkPad T61(video card: Nvidia Quadro NVS 140M)
Today, I found the new Nvidia driver, and I upgraded it.
And glxgears result is following:
13328 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2665.484 FPS
13327 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2665.334 FPS
13727 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2743.449 FPS
13836 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2761.677 FPS
:That's slow...
Before upgrading the nvidia driver, glxgears result was almost 3400FPS avarage.
I do not know what is happened, and what is wrong.
/etc/X11/xorg.conf is not changed.

On LinuxMint, glxgears result is almost 4500FPS avarage.
I do not know, what is difference between ArchLinux and Linux Mint.
I compared both glxinfo results of Arch and Mint with diff command,
Theare are few differences only.
