Re: Unable to properly start X

I decided to do a fresh reinstall and get everything working before setting up a WM/DE.
So I did all the above until the basic startx worked flawlessly. Then I downloaded XFCE4 and that worked perfect too.
After that i downloaded enlightenment and I got an error similar to the one I got in kdemod which pretty much says that there is no display or that it cant be reached.

Enlightenment cannot initialize its X connection.
Have you set your DISPLAY variable?
E17: Begin shutdown procedure!

Re: Unable to properly start X

I had lines for both VESA and Nvidia in my xorg.conf, and had the Nvidia line commented out. After updating today, Xorg was broken. I went back and commented/uncommented lines to change to the Nvidia driver, and all seems to be well now. I'm not technically competent enough to offer more, but maybe someone can use this information.

Re: Unable to properly start X

I did some more reading on the forums and I think this is what happens:

Megagram's problem is that the X server, which must be running before any graphical program can use it, refuses to start when the monitor it is connected to is off. I don't know how to fix that, but what about starting everything up properly then suspending to memory?

Except that instead of having the monitor off it simply isnt recognized properly.

Re: Unable to properly start X

Must've been something with the nvidia/nv drivers. Vesa was able to load kdemod [in its 4.1 flavor].
