can you post your awesomerc.lua and xdefaults? Also, what program is doing the volume management and displaying the IP?

Looks like his .awesomerc is still libconfuse, so he is still using awesome ~ 2.3. Awesome-git is the only version using the lua configuration. The volume management looks like alsamixer.

The volume management/ip/clock/pacman status are all adesklets - http://adesklets.sourceforge.net/desklets.html (the pacman status is non-interactive, just shows what packages are due an update)
